‘The Good Doctor’: Liz Friedman Upped To Co-Showrunner For Season 6 Alongside David Shore
Exclusive: Longtime Good Doctor executive producer Liz Friedman has been named co-showrunner on the ABC medical drama for next season alongside The Good Doctor developer and executive producer David Shore, who has served as showrunner for the past five seasons.

The Good Doctor, whose Season 5 finale airs this coming Monday, already has been renewed for a sixth season. It comes from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.

“I have worked with, and shared my burdens with, and depended on Liz for years,” Shore said. “Very much looking forward to enjoying all the great things she is going to do with the show.”

Friedman, who started her career with an unpaid internship at Sam Raimi’s Renaissance Pictures — which led to jobs as Raimi’s assistant, and later an executive there, developing and producing Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess and Young Hercules — transitioned to writing when she was hired

‘The Good Doctor’: Brandon Larracuente & Savannah Welch Join Cast As Interns For Season 6 Of ABC Drama
Exclusive: Brandon Larracuente (Freeform’s Party of Five) and Savannah Welch (HBO Max’s Titans) have been cast in major recurring roles on ABC’s The Good Doctor as the newest St. Bonaventure interns.

Their characters will be introduced at the start of the recently picked up Season 6 and, as is the case with any new class of interns, the recurring castings include options for Larracuente and Welch to become series regulars, I hear.

Larracuente will play Daniel (aka Danny). In the hospital he is known to charm doctors and nurses alike, even with his interest in somewhat controversial alternative medicine. Outside of the hospital, he is a bit of a lone wolf and an intriguing mystery to his coworkers.

Welch will play Danica (aka Danni). She is an Annapolis graduate, having completed medical school in the Navy. Danni is charismatic, ethical to a fault, and competitive both inside and outside the hospital.

Andrews will play Sophie, a smart and savvy documentarian whose inspiring documentary projects have won her many accolades and awards. Born with dwarfism and being a person with a disability herself, Sophie immediately is intrigued by her aunt’s doctor — autistic surgeon Dr. Shaun Murphy (Highmore) and his neurotypical fiancée Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara) — for reasons that Sophie will reveal along the way.

ABC is firming up its 2022-23 slate as we inch closer to upfronts.

The network on Wednesday renewed The Rookie and The Good Doctor.

The renewals are no-brainers, with The Rookie having a spinoff in development and The Good Doctor holding up relatively well.

Season-to-date The Good Doctor is averaging 7.2 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating in the demo, while The Rookie is pulling in 6.3 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.

The Good Doctor launched in 2017 and stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy.

Both “The Rookie” and “The Good Doctor” have been renewed at ABC.

For “The Rookie,” that means the show will go to a fifth season, while “The Good Doctor” will be back for a sixth. “The Rookie” currently airs Sundays on ABC with “The Good Doctor” airing on Mondays.

The renewals come as ABC is also prepping a potential spinoff of “The Rookie” starring Niecy Nash. The spinoff will be introduced in a two-episode backdoor pilot during “The Rookie’s” fourth season.

“The Rookie” stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, and Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers.

According to TV Line, the latest departing star is Osvaldo Benavides.

The news is somewhat surprising when you consider Benavides was only elevated to series regular a few months ago.

One thing that was evident from the series is that all of the characters get a lot to work with. They feel very well-developed, and the show does not waste a single character.
