In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.
The Manson killings shook Los Angeles and defined a generation. The story of the Manson family has inspired countless shows and films, including, most recently, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Victoria Pedretti played a character called “Lulu” in the film,...

A day before Britney Spears’ 35th birthday (December 2), the folks over at Lifetime released a handful of photos from the upcoming singer’s biopic, and boy were we confused.
The images feature the Princess of Pop (Natasha Bassett) – which in the glam pic looks more like a 2008 Taylor Swift – along with her then-beau Justin Timberlake (Nathan Keyes), ex-husband Kevin Federline (Clayton Chitty) and the rest of the *Nsync crew, none of which actually look like the real-life celebrities.
Lifetime has a knack for casting actors who tend to not look like the celebrities they are portraying, e.g., Amanda Fuller in “The Brittany Murphy Story,” Camilla Luddington and Nico Evers-Swindel in “William & Kate,” so it’s not surprising to see such unrecognizable faces portraying the stars. (Really, that’s supposed to be *Nsync?!)

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 20, “City Beneath the Sea”
Written by Carina Adly MacKenzie and Charlie Charbonneau
Directed by Leslie Libman
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Klaus takes a walk through Dahlia’s memories, Hayley chooses a family, Elijah and Rebekah attempt to keep Hope hidden, and Aiden is laid to rest.
Last week, Klaus was arguably the biggest weakness in an otherwise excellent episode, and not much has changed this week: he remains frustratingly temperamental and fickle in “City Beneath the Sea,” an episode that tries to garner sympathy for Dahlia and Klaus, two villains who believe themselves to be unjustly accused, and only serves as a reminder that they are, without a doubt, the villains of this story.
While Dahlia’s flashbacks/memories are interesting and do add another dimension to her character, they feel like too little, too late.

Airs Mondays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Hayley and Klaus reunite with baby Hope, Rebekah helps Elijah and Klaus plot against their mother, Davina grows closer to Kol, and Cami tries to reason with Finn.
The Originals may only be halfway through its sophomore season, but the show sure knows how to deliver a solid, and thoroughly entertaining, mid-season finale. Of course, it helps that the episode features both Elijah and Klaus cooing over a baby girl, as well as enough familial drama, surprise twists, and romantic encounters to keep fans satiated until January.
Esther and Mikael’s reunion isn’t quite as satisfying as the reunion each parent has with their children, but it’s still a fascinating glimpse into their fractured marriage–with parents like that,...

The Originals, Season 1, Episode 18, “The Big Uneasy”
Written by Marguerite MacIntyre and Michael Russo
Directed by Leslie Libman
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, the witches host a ceremony, Klaus attempts to re-win the favor of several French Quarter women, Hayley learns the truth about the werewolves’ pact with Klaus, and Elijah struggles to keep the peace.
The Originals is very much a show about the politics of power, and “The Big Uneasy” is a great example of just how entertaining supernatural-fueled power struggles can be, especially when set in a place as lovely and lively as New Orleans. Of course, it helps that those vying for power in the French Quarter are all intelligent, persuasive people–it’s incredibly hard not to root for everyone fighting for the hypothetical throne.

The Vampire Diaries, Season 5, Episode 17: “Rescue Me”
Written by Brett Matthews and Neil Reynolds
Directed by Leslie Libman
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
With the reveal earlier in the season that Silas and Stefan being lookalikes was not a coincidence, there were hints that a younger doppelganger in that line would be present somewhere, closer in age to the latest Ayana doppelganger Elena. This tidbit took on a note of urgency last week as the Travelers began hunting for the last doppelganger via Stefan, putting Caroline in a delicate position of having to kill a stranger to save her friend. This week’s episode picks up on how Caroline deals with the situation, in a strong episode that brings the threat of the Travelers to the fore.
Hearing Liv’s true objective this week is an intriguing storyline. The Travelers’ issues with the doppelgangers have been well-documented this season,...

The Originals, Season 1, Episode 11, “Après Moi, Le Déluge”
Written by Marguerite MacIntyre and Diane Ademu-John
Directed by Leslie Libman
