“Outside,” (2024) the latest Filipino offering on Netflix, is a dense psychological drama set in the quickfire world of the zombie apocalypse. It traverses the familiar grim reality of an apocalypse with a moderate dose of zombie-related dread and wanton violence. What writer-director Carlo Ledesma explores more in his film is the horror of childhood trauma, the festering of which creates a cycle of violence that is more terrible than any of the undead’s actions. The price for such an attempt is the wrath of the fans of zombie films. “Outside” is bereft of pulsating zombie-killing actions that one is accustomed to in such films. Instead, it examines the frailties of human emotions and the ugliness of the very much alive.

Madrid’s Ecam Incubator continues to foster emerging talent, and Jorge Cantos’ “The Wanderers” (“Los olvidados”) is a project to watch.
Developed by Entre las piedras and Mammut and produced by Eva Bodas, Álvaro Díaz Calvo, Sara de la Fuente and Alberto Tortes, the film explores political and emotional themes with a mystical edge.
It follows Hamza, an unaccompanied minor with extrasensory abilities, on a journey to France. Accompanied by Lucero, his social educator, Hamza’s journey through Spain’s rural landscapes unearths past traumas and navigates the fragile boundaries of love and identity. Shooting is tentatively set for late 2025 or early 2026, with the team seeking additional financing and finalizing international partnerships.
Cantos has crafted an intimate yet ambitious narrative. “The central theme of the film is love, or what we call the limits of love,” he explained. “It’s about what one is willing to do purely because the...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at Lucero's Long Way Back Home, directed by Jeff Nichols. The films of Jeff Nichols ánd the sole music video he made, feel very much off the same voice. Which is curious, considering his films run the gamut from, among others, a harrowing drama about a man losing his grip on reality; a coming-of-age-crime film about two teens sheltering an escaped convict; a real life romance drama about an interracial couple facing racism and other adversities; and an Amblin'-inspired science-fiction movie. His new film The Bikeriders, is inspired by films like Easy Rider. This seems like a diverse array of movies, but...

As The Bikeriders rolls into theaters, viewers will be transported back into the 1960s and 1970s, particularly via biker culture and the fictional club, the Chicago Vandals. The film’s ensemble includes Austin Butler as Benny, a lover of motorcycles who joins up with Tom Hardy’s Johnny, who starts the Vandals. Jodie Comer plays Kathy, who immediately falls for Benny one night at a bar. Damon Herriman plays Johnny’s righthand man Brucie, and other staples of the crew include Beau Knapp’s Wahoo, Karl Glusman’s Corky, Boyd Holbrook’s Cal and Michael Shannon’s Zipco. Norman Reedus later joins up, and the story wouldn’t exist without Mike Faist’s rendition of Danny Lyon, a photographer who put together the book titled The Bikeriders which inspired Jeff Nichols’ film.

On Tuesday, two NYPD police officers who were present for Jonathan Majors’ arrest for alleged assault testified in court in his ongoing trial.
Officer Erik Lucero and Sergeant Bryan Hanson responded to Majors’ 911 call on March 26 after the actor found his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, unconscious on the floor of a walk-in closet in the apartment they had shared. His 911 call was played in court and it was revealed that Majors made the call fearing that Jabbari had overdosed or committed suicide, according to Hanson.
Majors could be heard saying “she’s unconscious,” “she’s my ex partner” and that he didn’t know what she had taken when asked if Jabbari suffered from anything prior. He said he couldn’t get into the area that Jabbari was located in their apartment and needed the help of a handyman. The 911 operator told Majors to “keep an eye on her breathing.”

On May 13, 1975, Ray Benson, leader of the Western-swing heroes Asleep at the Wheel, was readying his band to make their stage debut at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, when he received the news that Bob Wills, the “King of Western Swing,” had died that morning in nearby Fort Worth.

Jeff Nichols has only been making films for about a decade, and all five of them star Michael Shannon. As we await their next feature-length collaboration (which may be an Alien Nation remake), the duo has now reunited once again, this time for a seven-minute short film tied to Lucero’s new album “Among The Ghosts.” Titled Long Way Back Home, the cast not only includes Shannon, but Garrett Hedlund, Scoot McNairy, Paul Sparks, as well as Lucero bandmember and Nichols’ brother, Ben Nichols.
Filmed in Memphis, home of the band, and Arkansas, home of the Nichols, it follows Shannon as Stanton, a man looking for his younger brothers. “It felt inevitable that one day I’d team up with my brother and the rest of Lucero,” Jeff Nichols told Variety, “and once I heard the haunting sounds of ‘Long Way Back Home,’ I knew this song was the perfect opportunity to do it.

Michael Shannon Looms Large in Stirring Western-Style Short From ‘Mud’ Director Jeff Nichols — Watch
Jeff Nichols has written and directed a hybrid short film/music video for the band Lucero, and it’s a Western starring Michael Shannon doing what he does best. It is the first music video from the writer/director best known for “Mud” and “Loving,” and the filmmaker’s sixth collaboration with Shannon, who has starred in all of the director’s features. The collaboration is special for other reasons, as Nichols’ brother is Lucero’s lead singer and guitarist.
Titled after the Lucero song, “Long Way Back Home,” the film stars Shannon as Stanton, a man searching for his two younger brothers, played by Garrett Hedlund (“Mudbound”) and Scoot McNairy (“Halt an Catch Fire”). The film opens auspiciously with a scene between Shannon and Paul Sparks (“House of Cards”); as Stanton wonders how to find his brothers, Sparks asks if he wants to kill them. “Why would I want to kill my little brothers?...
