Director Erin Lee Carr hates to use the term “brand” but that’s exactly what she’s cultivated when it comes to bizarre true crime stories. “People are like, ‘This horrible thing happened. Let’s call Erin Lee Carr,'” the documentarian told TheWrap.
It’s not surprising to see how Carr developed this reputation. She was behind HBO’s Gypsy Rose Blanchard documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and “I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter,” both of which went on to inspire the Hulu scripted series “The Act” and “The Girl From Plainville,” respectively. In 2021, Carr released Netflix’s “Britney vs Spears,” the same year the pop icon’s conservatorship was terminated. She’s also produced a Peacock documentary on Stormy Daniels, a Hulu docuseries on the Sherri Papini kidnapping hoax and an HBO documentary on journalist Kim Wall, who went missing after boarding Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen’s submarine.

"You're aware that psychopaths exist amongst us." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Into the Deep, which is finally getting an official Netflix release at the end of this month after waiting for two years. It first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival but hasn't shown up anywhere until now. The film offers a chilling inside look at the story of famous Danish inventor Peter Madsen, who brutally murdered a Swedish journalist while taking her onboard his homemade submarine back in 2017. It's one of the strangest stories because this guy kept changing his story, and trying different tricks with the police and journalists and everything. This doc began as an actual profile on Madsen and his rocket-building company, but everything changed after 2017 and director Emma Sullivan spent years putting together this version. It has been edited since the Sundance 2020 premiere, removing (and digitally altering) three...

Documentaries about living subjects are always a bit of a wild card, and "Into the Deep" looks like one of the wildest documentaries to come out in recent memory. The doc premiered to rave reviews at Sundance Film Festival but had its Netflix release put on hold due to concerns about the consent of some of the documentary's participants. Now, Netflix has released a trailer for an edited version of the documentary with the non-consenting parties removed, and this doc looks truly fascinating.
Documentary filmmaker Emma Sullivan intended to make a documentary about the unique inventions and enterprising spirit of Peter Madsen, an entrepreneur who had built three personal submarines and was working on a rocket to launch himself into outer space. Instead of focusing on the rocket's production and launch, however, the documentary's focus changes when Madsen takes a journalist named Kim Wall out on his submarine and returns alone.

In another reality, it could have been Erin Lee Carr in the submarine with Peter Madsen, the man convicted of the 2017 killing of Swedish journalist Kim Wall. Of course, in a sense, it could have been any female journalist in that submarine. But Carr, whose documentary Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall debuts Mar. 8 on HBO Max, actually reached out to Madsen’s company in 2013 for an interview.
At the time, Carr was working on a show for Vice about outer space, and Madsen had not yet alienated himself from his colleagues at Copenhagen Suborbitals,...

The murder of journalist Kim Wall is at the heart of a new two-part documentary set to air on HBO March 8. The first trailer for Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, directed by Erin Lee Carr, reexamines the shocking event and its aftermath.

She was last seen just prior to interviewing the eccentric entrepreneur Peter Madsen aboard his self-made submarine in Danish waters. Madsen changes his story multiple times...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Investigation,” including the ending.]
There’s something conspicuously absent from a large portion of “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s dramatic retelling of the 2017 death of investigative journalist Kim Wall. It’s hard to imagine another treatment of this story that would span six episodes while omitting any onscreen depiction of eventual convicted murderer Peter Madsen.
Some audiences may balk at the ways the HBO show (now available in full on HBO Max) removes some of these standard elements of biographical crime stories. In staying as close to its title as possible, though, “The Investigation” managed to address a recent tragedy in a surprisingly clear-headed way.
Much of that stems from the way that “The Investigation” handles the passage of time. Though the season spans months, writer/director Lindholm resists putting down easy markers to wring tension out of breaks in the case. There’s a sameness to the way it unfolds,...

"If you can't go out to have fun, you have to go inwards." High Octane Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie "sci-fi" thriller titled Buoyancy, the feature directorial debut of Dutch filmmaker Roel Leijten. The film tells the story of an ambitious young woman who is invited on a submarine by an eccentric entrepreneur. This is very clearly a fictional version of the horrifying true story of eccentric entrepreneur Peter Madsen, who murdered a young woman on his submarine. This was also turned into a doc last year called Into the Deep. Buoyancy stars Rebecca Finch, Michael Wagner, Portia Booroff, and Simon Rhys-Jones. Alas, this film looks super cheesy with so many elements of the story excessively exaggerated. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Roel Leijten's Buoyancy, direct from YouTube: When an overly ambitious student (Rebecca Finch) gets invited for a submarine journey by an eccentric entrepreneur,...

The latest entry into the true crime genre is The Investigation, HBO's Danish crime series about the disappearance and murder of a journalist. The stranger-than-fiction tale is, in fact, based on a true story - one you actually might remember seeing on the news only a few years ago. Be forewarned, though: it's a pretty gruesome tale.
The Investigation is a fictionalized account of the attempts to solve the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, who was killed in 2017 under odd circumstances that soon made international headlines. According to the BBC, on Aug. 10, 2017, Wall boarded a private submarine owned by eccentric Danish inventor Peter Madsen, whom she planned to interview about his plans to build a rocket that could be launched into space. An experienced journalist, the 30-year-old Wall had been chasing the story for some time and accepted an invitation to visit Madsen on his boat to do the interview.

HBO’s “The Investigation” is a tough watch, especially for those of us who knew Swedish journalist Kim Wall, but writer/director Tobias Lindholm made an engrossing miniseries out of the fairly mundane detective work that went into proving out one of the most heinous murders — and biggest tabloid stories — of our time.
The six-episode Scandinavian dramatization starts in a courtroom as viewers — and head homicide investigator Jens Møller and prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen (Pilou Asbæk) — hear an unfavorable verdict in a murder case. This legally unprovable murder, which we are made to believe was definitely committed by the defendant, has no real relation to the Wall murder case.
It was a tough sell for Lindholm to convince others this was the right opening scene

The 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall seized the world’s attention, likely for two reasons. The first is the mix of gruesome and unexpected details of her killing at the hands of Peter Madsen, a Danish inventor who invited Wall into his homemade submarine under the pretense of an interview before dismembering her body and disposing of it in the bay between Denmark and Sweden. The second is that Wall was a promising young woman — a worldly and accomplished 30-year-old who was planning an imminent move to China — whose light was extinguished by a violent misogynist when she ...

There can be no question that, as of its halfway point, 2020 has been the most trying, tragic, lamentable and downright unfortunate year most of us have ever experienced. This fact renders the creation of such ephemera as film and television best-lists even more trivial than usual, especially as cinemas were shutting down by March.
But on the other hand, the staggering amount of filmed material — old and new, foreign and domestic — along with the enforced stay-at-home circumstances we’re all still experiencing has offered up more opportunities to sample all sorts of fare one might never have had the time or inclination to check out before. This is one of the few consolations for, and escapes from, of our present earthly predicament.
Very few people will disagree with my jaundiced opinion of the films that were released in 2020 before the Coronavirus Curtain came down 3 1/2 months ago. Bad Boys for Life,...

Documentary filmmaker Emma Sullivan was already there when inventor Peter Madsen’s submarine, the UC3 Nautilus, went missing off the coast of Copenhagen in August 2017, with journalist Kim Wall on board. Sullivan had been filming Madsen, a hobbit-y egotist with electric blue eyes, for 18 months, and until that day, she believed she was making a film about his attempt to blast into space on a scrappy, self-made rocket, with the help of a dozen unpaid volunteers who believed in his charismatic Diy hustle. Madsen is found and flashes a thumbs up to Sullivan’s camera. But Wall isn’t — and the documentary turns into a rare opportunity to study a murderer before his first kill.

‘Into the Deep’ (Photo credit: Sundance Film Festival).
Australian writer-director Emma Sullivan’s true-crime documentary Into the Deep has been praised as more chilling than some of the horror movies which screened in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section.
Commissioned by Netflix and produced by Denmark’s Mette Heide and Aussie Roslyn Walker, the film premiered in the world cinema documentary competition at Sundance.
Sullivan was filming Danish inventor and rocket engineer Peter Madsen for a doco on his space lab when events took a shocking turn.
On August 10 2017 he brutally murdered Swedish journalist Kim Wall on his homemade submarine in the waterways outside Copenhagen. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Among the first reviews, Vanyaland’s Nick Johnston lauded the extensive and genuinely stunning footage that the documentarian filmed over the course of two years, both before the murder and in its immediate aftermath.
