FilmNation, the company behind films including Arrival and The Big Sick, has closed an output deal with Chinese digital platform iQiyi. The deal gives it exclusive access to show FilmNation features on its on-demand platform for three years. It comes as FilmNation is launching Paul Dano’s directorial debut Wildlife in Cannes. “More Chinese movie fans than ever before will be able to experience many of the best independent films from some of the world’s most exciting directors,” said FilmNation’s VP, Sales Rob Carney. “Following on the heels of our strategic cooperation agreements with entertainment companies such as Fox, Disney, Sony and Netflix, this exclusive partnership with FilmNation represents the next step of iQIYI bringing subscriber members an ever more international selection of high quality contents,” added Yang Xianghua, Svp, iQiyi.

Though the very idea of following a religion based on a popular series of films may sound amusing to outsiders, it's clear that at least some of the people interviewed in American Jedi are very serious about their beliefs. That makes it very good news that Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to the documentary and has made plans for digital distribution in November 2017. It's a timely announcement in view of the giant gathering of fans in San Diego, California for Comic-Con this weekend. Laurent Malaquais, who previously explored unexpectedly devout fans in his documentary Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony, decided to chronicle "real life 'Jedi' who follow the Jedi path based on the Star Wars mythology,"...

Bronies unite: there's a new My Little Pony film on the way...
One of the films we've got queued up on our to-watch disc pile is Laurent Malaquais' documentary Bronies, which comes with the subtitle 'The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans Of My Little Pony'. And we've just picked up the 2014 documentary A Brony Tale, directed by Brent Hodge, as well.
It would be fair to say that My Little Pony geekdom is quite pronounced right now, primarily off the back of the 2010 animated series, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. And Hasbro has been sitting up and taking notice. So much so that it's announced plans for a new My Little Pony big screen adventure, which will arrive in cinemas 21 years after My Little Pony: The Movie (which boasted the voice talents of Danny DeVito and Nancy Cartwright, no less).
The new film will be fully animated (perhaps...

What does My Little Pony have in common with Star Trek? Let me share with you this most interesting moment during Sir Patrick Stewart and John de Lancie’s Q&A panel at Dallas Comic Con this past weekend. John de Lancie spoke about how Gene Roddenberry’s notion for a better future for mankind in Star Trek loosely related to 2011’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, where he voiced the antagonist, Discord.
“I ended up doing a cartoon show called My Little Pony. (crowd cheers) Didn’t know anything about it. I looked at the material. It was really good. I went there and knocked off a couple of [lines]. Completely forgot about it. (pauses) And then all of the sudden about four months later, I’m inundated about My Little Pony.
I go, ‘What?’ Discord! ‘What?’ and I turned to my wife and asked her what they were talking about.
