The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival has been plunged into chaos a month before its 2024 edition.
The opening press conference in Toronto on Tuesday was overshadowed by news that the Hot Docs artistic director, Hussain Currimbhoy, and 10 programmers had left the festival organizing team ahead of the 2024 edition kicking off on April 25.
Hot Docs in a festival statement confirmed Currimbhoy’s departure as artistic director on March 20, “due to personal reasons.” “Regrettably, some members of the programming team have decided not to participate in this year’s festival. We thank them for their contributions,” the documentary festival added.
Their departure forced Hot Docs president Marie Nelson — the former ABC News and Disney exec who took the helm at the Canadian festival in June 2023 — onto the back foot when she stepped forward to unveil the lineup for the 2024 edition.

Beloved Indian actor Anupam Kher has had a tremendous 2022 on screen. This year’s credits include three successful Indian films – “Kashmir Files”, “Karthikeya 2” and “Uunchai” – but now the familiar face says he is ready to return behind the camera.
Speaking to Variety on the side-lines of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Kher said, “I would love to direct. After a long time, a story has come to me. My niece is autistic and I have a story about a grandfather and his autistic granddaughter who live together. I have a rough structure already. Once I write the script, I may start by the end of this year or next year.”
Such a move would come twenty years after his feature directing debut, 2002’s “Om Jai Jagadish”.
Before that, he will close out this year with the release of Tamil horror “Connect” (December 2022), in which Kher plays a...

Fuse Media has set premiere dates for the next three documentaries in its Fuse Docs series, which explore important themes through music and diversity, and announced the first title under its new indie Fuse Films banner.
Premiering on March 2, Fatherhood is part documentary, part musical performance — featuring genre-spanning songs from hip-hop to blues. It follows young people in Memphis, Los Angeles, New York and London as they write and perform songs that address healing, with the goal of closing the gap between children and their fathers. Ben Gregor directs.
Sickboy, which bows on April 6, focuses on three best friends who team up to create a podcast that laughs in the face of serious illness. Jeremie (one of the trio), whose own disease limits his life expectancy, has become deeply concerned about how our society conditions us to avoid speaking with loved ones about serious health problems. What started off as...

Venus. Eisha Marjara: 'In Venus the focus was not on the transition but on Sid's relationships and her discovering herself as a woman and a new parent and a daughter and a colleague' Photo: Wolfe Venus, out now in the Us on VoD and DVD, is a delightful exploration of the challenges faced by trans woman Sid (Debargo Sanyal), who discovers, on the point of coming out, that she has a son (Jamie Mayers) she knew nothing about. Or as I put it at the time: “gentle; lyrical; funny”.
So I was looking forward to speaking with its Quebec-based writer and director Eisha Marjara.
I began by asking how she arrived at a film like Venus, given that she had started in documentary – and then proceeded to this very different, lighter genre. Eisha did not see it that way.

The closing movie of the London Indian Film Festival (Liff) was Venus, the life-affirming story of a transitioning woman, named Sid, who suddenly discovers that she’s the father of a 14-year-old son from a previous relationship. We were fortunate enough to have Eisha Marjara (the director), Joe Balass (the producer), Jamie Mayers, and Gordon Warnecke in attendance after the screening to share insights into how the film was put together.
“I was obsessed with the idea of a transgender character finding a son,” explained Marjara. This was inspired by an earlier short film that the director made in 2012 called House for Sale. However, creating the final story for Venus was a long one. “In earlier drafts I showed more about the office and work, showing the challenges that she goes through there,” said Marjara, “I also showed more about Ralph and his friends, how he gets bullied.”

The 2018 London Indian Film Festival (Liff) ended on a high note with Venus, a dramatic comedy about a transitioning woman who discovers she’s the father of a 14-year-old boy. Eisha Marjara, the director, was on hand to introduce the film. She enthused about how honoured she was to be at the Festival, especially after all the effort she has put into Venus since beginning the project in 2014. “I hope you enjoy it and have a good time,” she said.
Marjara needn’t have worried. The audience did enjoy Venus, very much in fact. The gentle humour in the movie elicited laughs in all the right places and the dramatic bits hushed the moviegoers, as we tensely hung on for how matters would resolve themselves. After struggling with gender identity, Punjabi Canadian Sid (Debargo Sanyal) finally makes the decision to live a life as a transgender woman outside the home, and to undergo the process of gender transition. Sid, born male, has always known she was a woman, but never took the step of dressing like one in public until making this important decision. As fate would have it, at the same time that Sid is planning for her new future and taking steps towards living her life fully as a woman, she meets Ralph (Jamie Meyers), a teenaged boy who, when confronted by Sid as to why he’s hanging around her suddenly, reveals that Sid is his father – Sid was involved, briefly, with Ralph’s mother (Amber Goldfarb), and Ralph, it seems, was the result.

During the recent years, there has been an increase on the Asian films that deal with the Lgbt community, with productions like “Wolf and Wolbachia“, “Small Talk” and a number of others. Montreal-based Eisha Marjara makes her own effort on the subject, through a rather cheerful approach.

The outstanding London Indian Film Festival is back again for it’s 9th year to thrill, to entertain, to move you and really make you think. Running from June 21st to the 29th, this year’s festival promises to be brilliant!
Festival director Cary Rajinder Sawhney says: “One great thing about being in the UK and especially London is that we are culturally intertwined to India and South Asia, not just through our shared history but our living, everyday experience where South Asian communities add so much to UK cultural life, of which cinema is an important aspect. This cutting edge festival showcases indie cinema that entertains but shows the more realistic and sometimes the raw side of South Asian culture but, at the same time, there are always stories of comedy, hope and the inexhaustible energy of over 1.3 Billion South Asian lives from the Indian subcontinent”.

Review by Peter Belsito‘Venus’ is a serious comedy about a family’s grudging, confused and difficult but slowly positive acceptance of their family member Sid (who is middle aged) as he transitions to a ‘she’ identity and becomes female.
This is the second ‘transgender’ feature I’ve seen recently.
First let me mention the other recent one from Chile, entitled A Fantastic Woman. It deals with a trans woman dealing with the sad death of her longtime lover and the vicious rejection of her by his family.
I mention that because this one also deals with family but in a very different way.
At once hilarious and serious, smart and sassy, Eisha Marjara’s articulate, absorbing and lively gender-shifting Canadian comedy is the witty tale of Sid, a transitioning woman going through a difficult time whose life takes a big turn when a 14-year-old boy named Ralph (Jamie Mayers...

Winners of the 2017 Whistler Film Festival were announced at the Awards Celebration this morning on the final day of the 17th annual Festival. Ian Lagarde’s first feature All You Can Eat Buddha and Jason and Carlos Sanchez’s A Worthy Companion tied for the $15,000 cash prize presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia and the $15,000 post-production prize sponsored by Encore Vancouver in the 14th edition of the coveted Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film. The jury states “each in their own way convey unique visions and creative storytelling the jury believes have made and will make powerful contributions to the world of cinema.”A Worthy Companion
A Worthy Companion takes a fresh and new perspective that explores the complexity and humanity within the predator, victim relationship. This film questions how we perpetuate manipulative power dynamics between adult and child through the inner struggle of our female protagonists.
