Despite a sizable outcry from devoted fans, East New York ended its one-season run on CBS Sunday.
The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits) thought Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren) might need his help, but as TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the November 20 episode of East New York shows, he may have made things worse — for her. In “CompStat Interruptus,” Suarez speaks up during CompStat, and after, he goes to see her in her office. “Now is not the best time for us to talk about it,” she tells him. That doesn’t matter. “Well, whether it is or it is not, Inspector, now is the time we’re going to talk about it,” he says, closing the doors. “You knew I was prepared,” Haywood tells him. Yes, Suarez agrees, but “you were prepared for legitimate questions. You weren’t prepared for Donaldson trying to make some kind of audition tape for the mayor.” As he explains, Chief Warren Donaldson (Danny Mastrogiorgio) wants to be chief.

Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) continues to spiral in The Blacklist Season 9 — and who can blame him? As you’ll recall, a couple episodes ago, Cooper turned to Lew (Danny Mastrogiorgio) to run ballistics on his weapon, following the death of his wife’s lover. And now, in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek at the December 9 episode, “Dr. Roberta Sand, Ph.D.,” Cooper worries just how much the police might know. Sure, Detective Heber (Mike Houston) might just be covering all sides to prove that he’s not playing favorites and might not truly suspect Cooper. But, “Charlene vouched for me. She lied to give me an alibi. Clearly he doesn’t believe her,” Cooper worries, now that Heber was in his house an hour ago, with a warrant to test his service weapon. All it’ll take is for him to get the ballistics results. “When he does, he...

First Trailer for Pippa Bianco’s Sundance Winner ‘Share’ Examines Sexual Assault in the 21st Century
Heralding both a new filmmaking voice with director Pippa Bianco and breakthrough actor with Rhianne Barreto, Share was one of the more striking films I saw at this year’s New Directors/New Films. World premiering a few months earlier at Sundance, where Barreto picked up an acting award and Bianco earned a Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, the drama examines sexual assault in the modern age with a distinct eye.
Ahead of a July premiere on HBO, the first trailer has now arrived for the film also starring Charlie Plummer, Poorna Jagannathan, J.C. MacKenzie, Nicholas Galitzine, Lovie Simone and Danny Mastrogiorgio. Jake Howell said in our Sundance review, “The aftermath of a sexual assault—the cell phone footage of which goes viral—is the subject of Share, writer-director Pippa Bianco’s debut feature film that deftly mines morose, intelligent drama from its entirely real scenario.”
See the trailer and poster below.

"I don't want help; I just want to know what happened." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Share, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and also played at the Cannes Film Festival and New Directors/New Films. From writer/director Pippa Bianco, the film is about a timely topic and how it relates to the high school experience nowadays. After discovering a disturbing video from a night she doesn't remember, sixteen-year-old Mandy must try to figure out what happened and how to navigate the escalating fallout. Rhianne Barreto stars as Mandy, with Charlie Plummer, Poorna Jagannathan, J.C. MacKenzie, Nicholas Galitzine, Lovie Simone, & Danny Mastrogiorgio. This received mixed reviews at the fests, with some positive and others saying it's "fragmented and disorienting." Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Pippa Bianco's Share, direct from HBO's YouTube: Based on Pippa Bianco’s...

Life can change online in an instant. That’s especially true for today’s teenagers, especially when it involves visual proof.
Such is the case in Pippa Bianco’s upcoming HBO film “Share,” which follows Mandy (Rhianne Barreto) as she tries to parse what happened before, during, and after a video that’s circulating among people at her high school. As she starts to find out more information about how she ended up unconscious and assaulted, that search for the truth permeates her school and family life.
Poorna Jagannathan and J.C. MacKenzie co-star as Mandy’s parents, alongside Charlie Plummer, Nicholas Galitzine, Lovie Simone and Danny Mastrogiorgio. “Share” is Bianco’s feature debut — her next directorial effort will be on a future episode of the HBO series “Euphoria,” which also addresses the many dangers and anxieties facing high schoolers.

With his buoyant air of all-American optimism and innate decency, Denzel Washington is well cast (by helmer George C. Wolfe) as Hickey, the long-awaited bearer of false hope, comforting lies, and unlimited free booze to the washed-up losers who patronize Harry Hope’s no-hope saloon. When the thesp sweeps down the aisle and onto the stage wearing a snazzy suit and a 100-watt smile, the whole theater warms up.
The huge ensemble cast (19 strong) presents a cross-section of some of the best character actors in the business. At center stage is the saloon keeper Harry Hope, played with worn-out Irish dignity and a bit of a warm brogue by Colm Meaney, who generously treats his bedraggled patrons to free drinks and lets them sleep it off in their chairs.

Greetings Gothamites!
‘Wow,’ I said to myself after watching this week’s instalment. ‘I don’t know what to make of that. I’ll mull it over.’ I still don’t know what side to settle on. Don’t get me wrong – I’m impressed, but sometimes it’s hard to come down on a balance and say that this was a ‘goodie’ or a ‘baddie’. I’m edging towards goodie, but let’s lay the bag of snakes out straight so you can decide for yourselves. From this point on, there are spoilers.
Plot Extravaganza!
This week’s plot features the avalanche of plot hurtling to the ground of narrative and the rubble of characterisation settling amidst the dust of some (not all of it, though) pretty shoddy writing. It begins with Oswald Cobblepot marching into police headquarters and announcing his presence after Gordon is meant to have killed him.

This debut season of Gotham has had its ups and downs as the series struggled to find the right balance between theatrical performances and gritty realism. The best stability so far has been struck in episode six, “The Spirit of the Goat”, a character centric episode. The series finds that balance again with this week’s episode, “Penguin’s Umbrella,” a central serialized episode that brings all of the underlying built up tensions of the past few episodes to the surface. The storm of change has started brewing in Gotham City, causing significant destruction all around. We know the show's fourth episode is titled after the Asylum of DC lore, but the official synopsis for the episode makes it sound like there's a political showdown over what to do with the Arkham property.

It’s hard to believe that Tom Hanks has never been on Broadway before. But the two-time Oscar winner will make his debut this spring in Lucky Guy, a new play by Nora Ephron, the late writer-director of two of his biggest box office hits (Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail). And this is no one-man vanity project, as you can see from this exclusive first photo from the production, which begins previews March 1 before an official opening April 1 under the direction of two-time Tony winner George C. Wolfe.

The opportunity to see a full-scale production of an Odets play should be motivation enough for any theater aficionado; like the chance at a title match, it doesn't come along very often. It's not a knock-out, but Golden Boy lands some mean punches, winning by decision.
While notably winded and running out of room at the end of the third round, this production has some very powerful scenes, capturing a moment in American history when plays had large casts and socialism was popular enough in corners of the U.S. to make moneyed men truly uncomfortable. (Note: If you label President Obama as a Socialist, please read more on the subject.) Taking on the imperial juggernaut of capitalism in a boxing ring that works as a metaphor, it is the story of a battle for the soul of a country being fought over the future of one young man's life.

Clifford Odets is one of those playwrights serious theatergoers regale and theater students study, yet he's not well known enough today.
The Lincoln Center Theater's production of "Golden Boy" at Broadway's Belasco Theatre, which opened Thursday (Dec. 6), reminds us why Odets is important.
The play talks to a time and place that has mostly disappeared. It's a time of hard men and harder women, and if the Depression can be romanticized, this would be it. The play itself does not romanticize hardship, but looking at the with eight decades of distance does. Of course that's more an indication of today, when another recession looks better.
Before I get into the particulars, I have a disclaimer. Years ago I knew one of the leads, Danny Mastrogiorgio (Broadway's "Wait Until Dark" and TV' "Blue Bloods"). He's the younger brother of a former friend, and I first saw him in a college production in the Bay Area.
