Tall, dark-haired British character actor, who tended to play dashing or temperamental leads in early British talkies from 1931. Specialised in adventure, crime and horror films. Went to Hollywood with his wife, the actress Anne Grey, and was first signed by Universal to appear in
Werewolf of London (1935). Settled in the U.S. permanently, mostly playing character roles, for the next 39 years.
