- Controversially dropped out of Yale after her freshman year in 1972 to move in with J.D. Salinger for ten months, when she was 18 and he was 53. She later wrote about the relationship in a 1998 memoir, and called Salinger a "predator".
- Has three children with her ex-husband Steve Bethel: a daughter Adrey Bethel (b. 1978) and two sons - Charlie Bethel (b. 1982) and Wilson Bethel (b. 1984).
- In February 2010, Maynard adopted two Ethiopian girls. In spring 2011, she told friends and family she could no longer care for the girls. She sent them to live with a family in Wyoming and, citing their privacy, removed all references to them from her website.
- She returned to Yale in 2018 to complete her college degree, and moved into a small one bedroom apartment in New Haven.
