Exclusive: Comedian and writer Julian Clary (Julian Clary: Live – Lord of the Mince) will play the title role in this festive season’s London Palladium pantomime Robin Hood, with singer and travel show presenter Jane McDonald (Cruising with Jane McDonald) topping the bill as Maid Marion.
The annual Palladium show, now in its ninth consecutive season, has become an eagerly awaited staple in the West End’s calendar. It runs from December 7 through January 12, 2025. Priority booking opens 10 Am (GMT) April 25.
Last year’s production, Peter Pan, with comedy legend Jennifer Saunders making her pantomime debut as Captain Hook, and with Clary playing Seaman Smee, was a sold-out success, playing 56 performances -often two a day – to an audience of more than 123,000 at the 2,200 capacity variety house.
When tickets went on sale, there was a moment when 90,000 people were in the queue, waiting their turn to book seats.

The Only Way is Essex producer Lime Pictures has snapped up one of the highest-profile execs to have left Paramount Global’s UK unscripted arm following its closure.
Joe McLusky, who was Viacom International Studios’ (Vis) Vice President and General Manager, Non-Scripted, has become Lime’s Director of Production Unscripted, replacing now-Monkey MD Helen Kruger Bratt. He will oversee all UK unscripted production across Lime Pictures and its All3Media stablemates Lion Television and Wise Owl Films.
McLusky is an experienced exec who has previously worked for Lime along with ITV Studios, Shine and Granada. At Vis, he oversaw a team making hundreds of hours of shows per year, mostly for Paramount network Channel 5 and MTV, including the likes of Cruising with Jane McDonald and Catfish UK. That team was closed earlier this year amidst Paramount Global layoffs, leading to around 20 redundancies, with other high-profile exits including Oliver Wright, who...

Exclusive: Channel 5 is on the brink of finding a new producer for its next Jane McDonald and Susan Calman shows. This follows owner Paramount Global’s decision to close the Viacom International Studios (Vis) UK unscripted division, revealed by Deadline last month.
Deadline understands that Daisybeck Studios, which makes some of Channel 5’s biggest hits including The Yorkshire Vet and Our Yorkshire Farm, is extremely close to taking on the work with two of the channel’s highest-profile presenters. Based in Leeds, eOne-owned Daisybeck is a trusted Channel 5 supplier that has made hundreds of hours of shows for the channel including many that focus on the outfit’s native Yorkshire.
The move comes as Paramount begins the process of apportioning dozens of hours of Vis’s factual programing to the UK indie sector.

The BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Scotland’s Stv are joining forces to broadcast a short film that attempts to burnish the credentials of British free-to-air television at a time when U.S. media giants such as Netflix and Apple are becoming increasingly influential.
The five broadcasters are clearing their schedules at 8.58 Pm Wednesday to show the two-minute film Our Stories, which was created by Uncommon Creative Studio and directed by Sam Walker through Pulse Films. It is the first time they have collaborated on such an endeavor.
Emboldened by the role they have played during the coronavirus pandemic and increasingly keen to underline their value when viewers are turning to streamers, the broadcasters hope that the campaign demonstrates the power of TV and its ability to bring people together. They said it also represents a statement on their contribution to the UK creative economy.

British broadcaster Channel 5 is setting sail on a new cruise with Scottish comedian Susan Calman replacing Jane McDonald.
Last week, McDonald revealed she was stepping down as host of long-running format Cruising with Jane McDonald and its spin-off Holidaying with Jane McDonald.
However, the ViacomCBS-owned broadcaster has navigated choppy waters by finding a replacement quickly. The Armchair Detectives host recently fronted Secret Scotland with Susan Calman for C5 and she will now step into the captain’s position on its key shows.
Both shows will be produced by Viacom International Studios.
Cruising with Susan Calman is commissioned by Factual Commissioning Editor Guy Davies and Holidaying with Susan Calman is commissioned by Greg Barnett.
Susan Calman said, “I’m over the moon to be working with Channel 5 on such a prestigious group of shows. I can’t wait to go on exciting voyages and incredible journeys and take the wonderful viewers with me.

The fact that CBS-owned Showtime revealed at the end of last month that it was developing a U.S. version of Paramount TV and Viacom International Studio’s Argentinean comedy 100 Days To Fall In Love is undoubtedly a coincidence, but it also sums up what the two companies need to do globally following the long-awaited decision to merge.
There has already been huge focus on the merger from a domestic point of view, including what the C-suite will look like and how the various domestic assets will work together, but both businesses are also global giants with CBS generating around $2.5B in revenue outside the U.S. last year and Viacom generating around $2.2B.
Below, Deadline looks at the different global strategies and what the merger will mean internationally for the two companies’ slew of foreign divisions as they rebuild the House of Sumner.

Viacom’s UK production studio has set its sights on moving into drama and children’s programming as its sister broadcaster Channel 5 plots life after Big Brother.
C5 unveiled its first annual financial results since the decision to cancel the long-running Endemol Shine format and despite a slight dip in turnover, it revealed that spent 2% more on original programming than in the previous year.
Turnover for the fiscal year of 2018, which ran to the end of September, was down from £379.7M (Us$473.3M) to £376.3M (Us$469.1M) with operating profit down from £45M to £39.9M. However, the company said that the latter’s decrease was down to a “decision by management to increase spend on UK original programming by 2% despite a decrease in turnover”. Its total content spend last year was £232M, which includes all programming spend including acquisitions.

When Viacom bought Channel 5 five years ago, the station was wholly dependent on U.S. acquisitions such as the “CSI” franchise, but times have changed greatly in those few years. Now, while many broadcasters express anxieties over the perceived threat from global tech behemoths, the U.K.’s third biggest commercial TV network, Channel 5, has reinvented itself by going local.
“Acquisitions aren’t cheap,” says program director Ben Frow. “You get into a bidding war with other channels, you get a license period. People don’t want to watch 22 hours of television anymore. Those days are over.”
Channel 5 even had the confidence to drop “Big Brother,” a move that undoubtedly caused some jangled nerves at Viacom. Yet, the station has been profitable for the past four years and is gaining in credibility.
Last year Channel 5 programs were nominated at the Royal Television Society and Grierson Awards, as well as earning international awards at Assn.

Viacom is expanding its production business in the UK and has handed responsibility to Comedy Central and Paramount international chief Jill Offman.
The U.S. media giant has launched a production center in Manchester and has rebranded its UK division Elephant House Studios as Viacom International Studios UK. This follows the launch of Viacom International Studios in Latin America last year. Separately, it has also opened a production base in Madrid.
Elephant House was responsible for series including reality format Make or Break and Cruising with Jane McDonald. It has recently scored its first original production for a third-party channel – producing a factual series for ITV with details to come.
Vis UK’s General Manager Joe McLusky, and Creative Director Ed Taylor will now report to Offman, who as international brand head for both Comedy Central and Paramount Network already has oversight of comedy and drama productions for Viacom out of the UK.

Exclusive: British broadcaster Channel 5 has certainly been stepping up its ambitions since Viacom paid $580M for it four years ago and there’s no better example than luring former BBC presenter Jeremy Paxman to the network.

Peaky Blinders won best drama at tonight’s BAFTA TV Awards beating The Crown in a surprise move. While Vanessa Kirby, who played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of Netflix’s royal drama, won best supporting actress, it was another disappointing night for Left Bank and the gang.
Kirby said Claire Foy, who was beaten to best actress by Three Girls’ Molly Windsor in another massive upset, was the “best sister I’ve ever had apart from my actual sister”. But it didn’t stop the surprise after Foy, who was at the center of a pay controversy earlier this year, will go empty handed in terms of UK awards for her star turn in The Crown.
It was largely a night for domestic successes rather than awards for the slew of international co-productions and British-made Svod series that were nominated.

‘The Crown’ Battles It Out With ‘Black Mirror’ & ‘Line Of Duty’ As BAFTA TV Nominations Are Unveiled
Netflix drama The Crown is once again set to duke it out to win at the BAFTA TV Awards after being nominated in three key categories alongside Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series Black Mirror, Thandie Newton-fronted cop drama Line of Duty and domestic British series Three Girls.
The period series was shut out at last year’s event despite picking up five nominations and has once again been nominated in the best drama category, while Claire Foy will go up against Hollywood star Thandie Newton for best actress. Given Foy’s performance over the two seasons, and the recent controversy over her salary, she is the hot favorite to pick up a gong as she exits the Left Bank drama. Denise Welch has hit out at Myleene Klass over comments she made about Loose Women.
Welch - who quit the ITV talk show in October last year following a row with producers over changes to the programme - took to Twitter to say how disappointed she was in Klass, who claimed the show was previously "too ranty and misogynistic" before she joined in January.
Klass had told the Daily Mail: "I love Loose Women. It's nice to be able to articulate and get things out there. But I feel it was getting a bit misogynistic, a bit post-menopausal or pre-menopausal and ranty.
"That's not how women should be represented so it's nice they've refreshed the panel and we can talk about politics, fashion designers and what else is going on in the week."
After reading the comments, Welch tweeted: "Disappointed @KlassMyleene @McGiff. Sadly ratings suggest most viewers don't agree with you.

Coleen Nolan and Kaye Adams are both returning to Loose Women later this month, ITV has confirmed.
Adams, the show's original anchor, will be back in the presenter's chair and will share the role with Carol Vorderman and Andrea McLean.
Nolan will return to a seat on the panel on Monday, October 7.
Kaye left the show in 2006, while Nolan departed in 2011 with an emotional send-off.
The duo join a lineup of panelists, which includes Sherrie Hewson, Jane McDonald, Denise Welch, Lisa Maxwell, Janet Street-Porter, Sally Lindsay, Linda Robson and Shobna Gulati.
"After two and half years away, now feels like the right time to 'come home' to Loose Women," said Nolan.
"I'm ready to embrace the show whole-heartedly again and return to the most special of places - the homes of our viewers. It's the public that have always mattered the most to me and the Loose Women audience are the most loyal of all.

The 35-year-old prison officer - who has been dubbed Screwbo - wowed the judges with a stunning performance of Beyonce's 'Listen' at the weekend and insisted she hadn't auditioned for anything before, but an online profile claims she has ''worked with Beverley Knight, Lulu and Jane McDonald''. The website also boasts that Sam has a ''wealth of experience'', and a former colleague insists she has previously auditioned for the talent show before, as well as 'Britain's Got Talent'. A number of Loose Women stars are reportedly facing the axe by early 2014.
ITV bosses are said to be looking to make some changes in the daytime show following a drop in ratings, according to The Sun.
Each panellist has allegedly been handed short 12-week contracts, with their place on the show getting reviewed in January.
Carol Vorderman, Carol McGiffin and Linda Robson are among the stars who may be replaced in the New Year.
Celebrity Big Brother star McGiffin and Sherrie Hewson are 2/1 favourites to go, according to the tabloid.
Jane McDonald and Janet Street-Porter follow at 3/1, while Lisa Maxwell and Sally Lindsay have odds of 4/1.
However, Denise Welch and Andrea McLean are tipped to survive the axe, bookmakers Ladbrokes has said.

Jane McDonald would never star on 'Celebrity Big Brother' because she wouldn't be able to have her weekly pork pie. The 'Loose Women' star - who recently landed her own daytime TV show 'Star Treatment' - is adamant she'll never sign up for the Channel 5 reality show because it would break her ritual of munching on the calorific meaty treats every Sunday night. Speaking to Bella magazine, she said: ''I love watching it but I'd go mad. One, I wouldn't get my pork pie on a Sunday, and that would throw me out for the rest of the week.

Loose Women star Jane McDonald has ruled out entering the Celebrity Big Brother house.
The singer confessed that she won't be following in the footsteps of Denise Welch and Coleen Nolan by appearing on the Channel 5 show.
"I love watching it but I'd go mad. One, I wouldn't get my pork pie on a Sunday, and that would throw me out for the rest of the week," McDonald told Bella magazine.
"I like tradition. I like certain things at certain times. Also sleeping in the bedroom with everybody else - oh no. And me without make-up, forget it.
"I think illusion is a lovely thing, and being in the arts and on stage, that little bit of mystique is a wonderful thing to keep."

New Loose Women panellist Shobna Gulati has told Digital Spy that she won't have a problem keeping up with the partying lifestyles of her co-stars.
Gulati started her new job as a regular on the ITV daytime show earlier this month.
The soap star was carried on to the set yesterday by a topless fireman, a reference to her Coronation Street character Sunita Alahan's recent storyline involving a blaze in the Rovers Return.
Speaking to Digital Spy at last night's (March 19) Royal Television Society Awards, Gulati said that she could "definitely" hold her own against the strong personalities on Loose Women and teased that she would have plenty of saucy tales to keep up with her co-stars.
"I'm an old girl, I've got lots of stories," she said.

The 2010 series champion - who late last year embarked on a Twitter spat with the 'Impossible' singer - said that he would like to take Arthur out for a pint. During an interview on ITV's Loose Women this afternoon (January 4), Cardle admitted that he bore no hard feelings towards the 24-year-old. "Look, he said something offensive to me," Cardle told panellists Carol Vorderman, Linda Robson, Janet Street-Porter and Jane McDonald. "[He said] that [previous X Factor winners] had written bad albums and that's fair enough, he's entitled to an opinion but we're talking about some brilliant song writers that I wrote the songs with," Cardle explained.
