The BBC has defended upcoming show Britain's Hardest Grafter, which has attracted complaints and a change.org petition signed by tens of thousands of people calling for it to be axed.
Producers Twenty Twenty and the broadcaster have issued a joint statement countering criticisms of the show, which has not yet started shooting.
"Britain's Hardest Grafter is a current affairs commission and not an entertainment format, and is at the very earliest stages of production," read the statement.
"The welfare of those taking part is of paramount importance and it is a misinterpretation of the concept of the series to suggest it is exploitative."
Controller of BBC Two and BBC Four Kim Shillinglaw first announced the commission in January, when it was called Britain's Hardest Worker.
Shillinglaw said at the time that the programme would be "looking at the low wage economy".
