Exclusive: Olivia DeJonge (Elvis) has been set as the female lead for The Trashers—the latest feature from Sundance prize-winning director Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), which will have her starring alongside David Harbour and Cooper Hoffman.
The film will center on Hoffman’s character Aj—the teenage son of Connecticut trash magnate and Genovese crime family associate Jimmy Galante (Harbour). In 2004, Galante bought the city’s minor-league hockey team and assigned A.J. to run it. The two had bonded over their love for the game when A.J. played, with his crooked father hoping to hold onto their bond. The kid did well, watching the team gain notoriety for its rough and violent style of play but also developing a wide fan base as it started to win more and more games. The team’s success and fame all came to an abrupt end with Galante’s arrest on 72 criminal charges.

Cooper Hoffman has found his next role in Cooper Raiff’s “The Trashers,” playing son to David Harbour’s father.
The “Cha Cha Real Smooth” writer-director’s third film takes a page from the real story of Jimmy Galante (Harbour), a Connecticut trash tycoon and member of the Genovese crime family who purportedly inspired the character Tony Soprano. In 2004, Galante took over his city’s minor-league hockey team and put his teenage son A.J. (Hoffman) in charge of running it. Under A.J.’s command, the team quickly gains notoriety for its violent but effective playing style, racking up one win after another. However, it all comes crashing down when Galante is arrested on 72 criminal charges.

If anyone has the talent to pull off playing Paul Lynde, the campy queer icon beloved for “Bewitched” and “Hollywood Squares,” it’s Billy Eichner, one of the most prominent out gay comedians in the business. Eichner has just been tapped to star as Lynde in “Man in the Box,” a biopic based on the actor’s life on the screen. While Lynde was never officially “out,” his sexuality was well-known in front of and behind the camera throughout a run on television beginning in the ’50s up until his death in 1982.
The project was first reported by Deadline, to whom Eichner gave a wide-ranging interview about the struggles for out and closeted gay actors in Hollywood, and how he hopes to de-stigmatize major roles for queer stars with the Lynde film.

In what can be seen as a slightly more ambitious venture for the filmmaker, Septillion to One chronicles the story of an “overzealous former FBI agent who has been relegated to the fraud unit of the Texas State...

A dramedy that the Duplass bros. were originally looking to add to their film canon, it’s Sundance habitual Jeffrey Blitz who would pick up with torch for a project that would also coincidentally see him reteam with his Rocket Science starlet Anna Kendrick. We’re thinking that after having his entire filmography in Spellbound (2002), Rocket Science (2007) and Lucky (2010) play out in Park City that this might be a fourth time’s a charm. Also starring Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori, June Squibb, Wyatt Russell and Amanda Crew, filming on the Atlanta set Fox Searchlight production began last March. We’re assuming that the trimmings and cutlery on Table 19 are more than ready.

Universal Pictures and Global Produce are set to develop a remake of the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme time travel action feature "Timecop".
The original, based on a Dark Horse Comic mini-series, was set in a near future where time travel is regulated by a special police force.
One officer (Van Damme) runs afoul a crooked politician (Ron Silver) who is using time travel to further his political career. It is one of Van Damme's most financially and critically successful films (and my personal favorite of his).
This remake however is expected to be more of a reboot, taking the basics and re-imagining the concept so it could serve as a potential franchise launcher.
Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce the project which is currently out to writers.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Universal are planning to reboot Timecop. Destined for another big screen outing, this time producers Mark Shmuger and Tom McNulty are developing the time travel actioner under the Global Produce label.
Based on a story by Dark Horse Comics, Timecop was originally introduced as a three part tale in an anthology. The 1994 adaptation was penned by the comic’s creators Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden. Directed by Perer Hyams and starring Jean Claude Van Damme as the time enforcement officer, the flick follows the Timecop as he solves crime across the ages. Ron Silver played the dirty politician Van Damme brought down in that first adaptation.
THR stated that Universal are on the hunt for writers for what will be “a re-imagining of the concept.” News first broke back in 2010 about Universal’s desire for a new Timecop franchise. At that time the project...

You asked for it, America? Universal Pictures and producers Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty ("The Spectacular Now") are currently planning a reboot of the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film "Timecop," a sci-fi actioner that centered on the attempts of a near-future security officer (Van Damme) to thwart a corrupt politician (Ron Silver) bent on using the era's time-travel technology for nefarious ends. Van Damme will not be involved in the update, which is being approached as a "re-imagining" of the concept. The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter. Exclusive: Warner Bros has hired Richard Cordiner to script Spacesuit, based on the book by Nicholas de Monchaux. This tells the true story of the unsung heroes of the Apollo space program — a team of bra and girdle designers from Playtex who successfully built the iconic spacesuit that enabled Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to walk on the moon. This improbable band of outsiders — led by a former TV repairman, a car mechanic, and their crew of spirited seamstresses — accomplished what all the aerospace giants couldn’t. It’s a long way from the shop floor of Playtex to the surface of the moon, and this incredible story tracks how it happened. Marc Shmuger’s Global Produce brought the project to the studio, and Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce with Alexandra Loewy overseeing development. Kat Likkel and John Hoberg are exec producers and Jon Berg and Racheline Benveniste are overseeing for the studio.

Though “The Grey” director Joe Carnahan is generally regarded as purveyor of all things gritty and testosterone-fueled, that doesn't mean his luck with launching projects is always golden. His darker “Daredevil” and “Gemini Man” sizzle reels remained just that, and casting disputes with Paramount led him off the “Death Wish” remake, but we'll see how his chances fare with a new project that similarly suits his distinctive style. THR reports Carnahan is in talks with Universal to direct “Sugar Bandits,” an adaptation of the novel "Devils In Exile" by “The Strain” author Chuck Hogan (who also penned the script). Produced under Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty's Global Produce label, the film follows an Iraq War veteran struggling with life back in Boston, who then assembles a team of like-minded soldiers to rip off the scores of drug dealers around town. Besides just screaming Carnahan's name, the story...

Joe Carnahan has entered talks to direct Sugar Bandits.
The Grey director is in line to adapt Chuck Hogan's novel Devils in Exile for Universal Pictures.
The film centres around Iraq War veteran Neal Maven, who is facing a life of menial jobs in Boston.
He teams up with some other soldiers to break up a gang of local drug dealers and steal their money.
Hogan wrote The Town - on which Ben Affleck's 2010 film was based on - as well as teaming up with Guillermo del Toro on vampire tale The Strain.
Carnahan was most recently attached to 20th Century Fox's abandoned Daredevil reboot and a failed attempt to remake Death Wish.
He is also developing movies based on vampire comic Undying Love, Mark Bowden's Killing Pablo and Mark Millar's Nemesis.
Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty will produce Sugar Bandits through Global Produce.

Major Hollywood studios like Warner Bros., Sony and Lionsgate debuted films at the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival, but new distributor on the block A24 might have made the biggest impact. The studio brought "Spring Breakers" and "The Spectacular Now" to Austin, and both films continued to impress festival audiences, though for vastly different reasons.
Directed by James Ponsoldt (last year's festival fave "Smashed"), "The Spectacular Now" is a coming of age tale in the vein of "Say Anything," but with a flask replacing a pen. The film -- based on the novel by Tim Tharp and written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ("500 Days Of Summer") -- follows Sutter (Miles Teller), a high school alcoholic who falls in love with Aimee (Shailene Woodley), an intelligent young woman with dreams of becoming a Nasa scientist. Following up last year’s exceptional Smashed, which debuted at Sundance and came away with a much-deserved Special Jury Prize, James Ponsoldt has returned to the festival this year with The Spectacular Now.
The film had its world premiere on Friday night out in Park City, and has been earning very promising early reviews, which is exactly what we’d expect from Ponsoldt.
And as a measure of just how promising the reactions have been, A24 have already acquired its North American distribution rights, within days of the film’s premiere.

A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. One of the most active new distribution companies on the independent film scene, A24 nailed down a deal to take North American rights to “The Spectacular Now” in the early morning hours Monday. Directed by James Ponsoldt, whose previous film, “Smashed,” screened in competition at Sundance in 2012, “Spectacular Now” was adapted from the Tim Tharp novel by Scott Neustadter and Michael H.
