Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.
It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.
Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.
When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

A lot of film stars made handsome money even when the studio system was on when they were on the roster of one of the studios in Mumbai which made films at regular intervals. The studios engaged actors on a monthly pay and the stars, thus, had a reason to feel secure. If a star was becoming popular, he/she gained more.
All one needed was talent and education qualifications counted for little as far as what the stars earned. They made many times more than what a white-collar graduate earned working for some or the other company.
Then came the era of actors charging per film. The cost of filmmaking was moving from thousands to lakhs. The first thing that a successful star did when a regular income started was to invest in a house. And, the next acquisition was, of course, a car. Chevrolet and Impala were the...

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is one of the most awaited festivals for the Indians and the diaspora. The festival, which is celebrated on a full moon day during the Hindu month of Sawan, has a special place in the hearts of all the siblings and cousins.
Cinema, too, has given an ode to the festival in different forms, most notably in the form of relationship dynamics between the characters: a special scene which becomes the essence of storytelling or a song that outlives its artistes and the film itself.
As we celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Wednesday, here are 5 films that celebrate the spirit of this ocassion:
1. ‘Rakhi’: The film which was released in 1962 stars Raju (played by Ashok Kumar) and his little sister Radha (played by Waheeda Rehman) as orphaned siblings, who look after each other. However, in the course of the narrative, the two have a rift...

Core business is a phrase that got familiar with the arrival of corporate houses in the film business. Which is to say, they would stick to the business they came to do and know it better, rather than branch out into other businesses that may look lucrative but you knew little about.

Darbaan (Zee5)
Starring Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal, Flora Saini and Harsh Chhaya
Directed by Bipin Nadkarni
There is something about Rabindranath Tagore’s stories that lends itself to great cinema. Darbaan is not a great film. But it’s a very good piece of cinema. Artistically imagined and gently executed, it has the very accomplished Sharib Hashmi playing a simple caregiver in a feudal family (the story is translocated from the end of zamindari to the takeover of the coalmines in Dhanbad in the early 1970s) whose life is a litany of subservience.
Hashmi immerses himself in the role with a furious passion that reminded me of Ashok Kumar in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwaad. Sharib Hashmi is a great actor destined to secrete his greateness in small meaningful films while actors with not even a grain of his talent are strutting around as stars in Bollywood.

I don’t know how far it would be correct to call Alankrita Shrivastava’s Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare a “new” film. I remember Bhumi Pednekar talking excitedly about it with me two years ago.
But I guess everything happens in its own time. Now is the time for ‘Dolly’ Konkona Sensharma and ‘Kitty’ Bhumi P to do the sister act. And they do look comfortable enough to pass off as sisters .I must say they make for a rowdy pair of siblings, discussing each other’s sex lives(haawww) with a titillating temerity.
This is the same universe of “liberated” women we met in the director’s Lipstick Under My Burqa. Disturbingly Konkona Sen Sharma is still the sexually frustrated wife with a thoughtless husband lurching mechanically over her inert physique in a bed that needs oiling. In Burqa the heaving husband was Sushant Singh.

Rohan Mehra, who is all set to embark upon a new journey by making an acting debut with Baazaar, has been working in the film industry for the last two years. Having assisted eminent film makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rohan also tried his hand at photography, composed music and did some ghost writing, before he got a photo shoot done and posted pictures on Instagram, when he caught the eye of Kal Ho Naa Ho’s director Nikkhil Advani who surprised Mehra with a phone call. Five years later, Rohan faced the camera for the first time with Nikkhil Advani’s Baazaar, directed by Gauravv Chawla. The film stars nawab Saif Ali Khan along with the talented Radhika Apte.

Producers Kyta Productions and Emmay Entertainment maiden co-production went on floors yesterday. Baazaar stars Saif Ali Khan and introduces Rohan Mehra, the son of the highly respected actor late Vinod Mehra.
Set against the backdrop of the heady cocktail of city life in Mumbai and it’s extremely seductive and dangerous world of stock trading, the film stars Saif Ali Khan in a role that has been inspired from the folklore surrounding the markets.
It took Nikkhil Advani just a few seconds to zero in on debutant Rohan Mehra, who has been aggressively groomed for a launch over the past eighteen months. This includes an ongoing regime of acting workshops, mixed martial arts, fight and dance training. In all this, Rohan has always found time to pursue his second love – playing the guitar and photography.

Debutant director Kapil Sharma is making a film on Rekha and wants Sridevi, Bipasha Basu, or Rani Mukherjee to essay the role
Rekha is one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actresses. She is gorgeous, has excellent acting skills, has had a long journey before she could taste success, and she has also been a part of a major illicit affair with Amitabh Bachchan. A biopic on her seems to be a good choice. This choice has been made by debutant director Kapil Sharma, brother of Anil Sharma (of Apne 2007 fame). According to sources, mysteries surrounding Rekha’s life as well as murky details of Bollywood may be exposed. It is reported that the director wants Bipasha Basu, Sridevi or Rani Mukerji to essay the veteran actress’s role while he wants Amitabh Bachchan, Kiran Kumar, Vinod Mehra and even Jaya Bachchan to play some parts as well.
