Smashing Pumpkins should have been in high spirits heading into the making of their second LP. But according to Billy Corgan, the lead-up to Siamese Dream was one of the darkest chapters in the band’s history. “We were on tour, selling out everywhere we go,” the singer told Rolling Stone in 1995 of the period following their 1991 debut, Gish. “Everything went cool, fine, dandy. Suddenly, boom: Nirvana. We went from being seen as future stars almost to has-beens, people saying, ‘Well, if you were so good, this would have happened to you.

Sarah McLachlan was one of the most important musical artists of the 1990′s, and helped usher in a new generation of female singer-songwriters, who were introspective, unapologetic, and vital to the otherwise arid pop landscape of that decade.
Speaking of vital, in 1997 Sarah founded the groundbreaking Lilith Fair, one of the biggest music festivals of the 90′s, which brought together some of the most influential and celebrated female musicians of the era.
Unfortunately, her recording career has been … sporadic. Since 2000, she’s only released two studio albums of new material, but that will change in May when her new album Shine On is released.
Today is Sarah’s 46th birthday, so until that new album is released, let’s take a look back at some classic songs from her discography.

Tragic things seem to happen in hotel rooms for a lot of rock and pop stars.
While fancy hotels are prohibitively expensive for some everyday folks, they’re a part of daily life for many top musicians.
Unfortunately, some of the time, they can be risky places as well.

If you spot Billy Corgan today (and it's hard to miss him considering his height), be sure to pat him on the back and give him a Hallmark card, because the Smashing Pumpkins mastermind celebrates his birthday on March 17. He is now 43 years old.
A native of Chicago (he's a diehard Cubs fan), Corgan founded the Smashing Pumpkins in 1988. Though the early work was spartan (the Pumpkins played a handful of shows accompanied by a drum machine because they hadn't yet hired skinsman Jimmy Chamberlin) but the group quickly established themselves as a force on the alternative rock scene in the early 1990s.
Combining elements of prog, punk, classic rock and industrial music, the Smashing Pumpkins' first three albums — 1991's Gish, 1993's Siamese Dream and 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness — represent perhaps the greatest trifecta in rock history. In those albums, Corgan proved himself to be both a brilliant and prolific songwriter,...

It is official, Jimmy Chamberlin is no longer The Smashing Pumpkins' drummer. "The Smashing Pumpkins' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group," so a post on the band's official website and MySpace read.
With Chamberlin's exit, The Smashing Pumkins now only have Corgan as the remaining member. Though so, Corgan confirms that he "will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins with plans to head into the studio this spring."
Jimmy Chamberlin joined The Smashing Pumpkins in 1988. He was fired from the band in 1996 after overdosing on heroin with former keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin in a hotel room in New York City. The incident resulted in Melvoin's death and Chamberlin's arrest for drug possession.
Three years later, Chamberlin re-joined the band. He contributed in the band's brief tour dubbed "The Arising", which showcased their new and classic materials, and...
