A Review Revisit.
The unique political fantasy Gabriel Over the White House has become painfully topical lately. This is an update of a 2009 review. To my knowledge nothing has changed with the product — I saw a re-promotion of Twilight Time’s 1984 disc and thought, Gabriel is twice as relevant and at least as scary.
Unstable times in America have produced some pretty strange political-religious message pictures.

Over the past eight years we’ve seen quite a number of remarkable documentaries about video game culture including Seth Gordon’s engrossing documentary about the quest for a Donkey Kong record and the feature-length Free to Play that follows three professional gamers from around the world as they compete for a million dollar prize in the first Dota 2 International Tournament. If you’re like me and you love video games and documentary filmmaking equally, you’re going to take an interest in Man Vs. Snake: The Long Twisted Tale of Nibbler. It tells the outrageous and inspirational true story of one man’s quest for the highest video game score ever recorded: In 1984, 16 year-old Timothy McVey walked into the legendary Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa Iowa; and 44 ½ hours later he walked away with the highest score in video game history – on a single quarter. The film, directed by Tim Kinzy and Andrew Seklir,...

With his turn as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series Game Of Thrones, Peter Dinklage became a star. His rambunctious and energetic depiction of an unforgettable character captured the imagination of the TV-watching public, his face and lines emblazoned on everything from T-shirts to bumper-stickers as he claimed the title of series Mvp.
What’s surprising is that Dinklage was a seasoned performer well before Thrones’ debut in 2011, with a hoard of TV, indie and studio titles to his name. Much of Dinklage’s early work pivoted around his diminutive stature (4 foot and 5 inches), but as his skills became more widely tested, the roles started to expand.
This week he’s in UK theatres alongside Adam Sandler and Kevin James for the much-derided Pixels, the story of ’80s video-game characters sent from above to wreck havoc on earth. Dinklage plays Sandler’s childhood nemesis, in a part styled...

Danielle Harold's final scenes as Lola Pearce in 'EastEnders' aired last night (28.07.15). The 23-year-old actress - who announced that she was leaving the BBC One soap after four years last month - was seen on Albert Square for the final time in last night's episode, a spokesperson has confirmed. Lola bid an emotional farewell to her on-screen grandfather Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) - who she affectionately refers to as ''Pops'' - while stood outside Walford East station as he pleaded with her to stay. Lola's decision to leave the Square came after Jay Mitchell was arrested for a robbery that took place...

Nope. Chris Columbus appears to be at war with the Happy Madison team at almost every moment in this film, and unfortunately, inertia eventually wins. By now, you have to be aware of the premise for the film. Sony has done a tremendous job of selling the idea. Aliens, after being exposed to our video games from the '80s, have decided to invade the Earth, seeing the games as a challenge of war. They send those familiar game icons against us, and three former arcade champions are forced to defend the Earth using their arcade skills. Fine. I have no problem with the idea. I even like the basic character set-up. These arcade champions, treated like young gods in the opening flashback of the film, all find themselves adrift as adults. Brenner (Adam Sandler) is working on the movie's version of the Geek Squad from Best Buy. Ludlow (Josh Gad...

Pixels
Written by Tim Herlihy & Timothy Dowling
Directed by Chris Columbus
USA, 2015
There are mild amusements to be found in Pixels. Nostalgia oozes from every cinematic pore, as director Chris Columbus weaves these videogame relics into a modern landscape. Unfortunately, rather than fully committing to his elegant premise, Columbus gets bogged down in unconvincing character development. It’s easier to believe a ginormous Pac-Man will chomp New York City than Kevin James will ever be President of the United States! Sandler fans and little kids might enjoy this rollcall of ‘80s game icons, but everyone else should just rent Ghostbusters instead.
Pixels is a love letter to old school gamers. The original nerds who spent way too much time (and money) at the local video arcade when they should have been cutting class and sneaking cigarettes, instead. Like any self-respecting clique, these gamers had their own de facto leaders. In this particular case,...

What would you do if aliens decided to attack the world using ‘80s video-game staples turned into very real threats? You’d turn to Adam Sandler, of course! At least, that’s the thinking in the new trailer for Pixels. Spawned from Patrick Jean’s inventive short, Pixels posits what happens when wrong-headed extra-terrestrials interpret examples of video games included in a space probe as a declaration of war. With creations such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede threatening the globe, an unusual countermeasure is suggested. Us President Will Cooper (Kevin James) tracks down old friend and ‘80s video game champ Sam Brenner (Sandler) so he can put together a team of old-school arcade masters including Josh Gad’s Ludlow Lamonsoff and Peter Dinklage’s Billy Mitchell-styled Eddie Plant to defeat the techno-menace. Together, they’ll utilise interesting tweaks on game tropes (such as driving Mini Coopers named for...
