- On Friday November 30, 2018 following the death of former Vice President and President George Bush, Mondale became the oldest living Vice President aged 90 years, 329 days just as his former boss Jimmy Carter also became the oldest living president aged 94 years, 60 days.
- Had the first ever Vice-Presidential debate with Republican Bob Dole in the 1976 election. Both of the men would later become Major Presidential Candidates for each of the parties, and later passed away just 7 1/2 months apart from each other in year 2021.

His maternal grandfather, Robert Cowan, was born in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada, to Scottish parents, and his maternal grandmother, who was born in Pennsylvania, had English and German ancestry. He was nicknamed "Norwegian wood" during the 1984 Presidential election (a play on his Norwegian ancestry and his appearance).

- He is the only person to have lost a statewide election in all fifty states while being represented by a major political party (though not in the same year). In the 1984 US presidential election Mondale, the Democratic nominee, lost 49 states to Ronald Reagan, carrying only his home state of Minnesota. In the 2002 Minnesota senate election Mondale was appointed to replace Senator Paul Wellstone on the ballot as the Democratic nominee after Wellstone's death eleven days before the election, but narrowly lost to Norm Coleman.
- On Friday 5 January 2018, Mondale celebrated his 90th birthday making him the 6th U.S. Vice President to reach the age of 90.
- On Wednesday February 6 2019, 4 days before she launched her 2020 Democratic Presidential Campaign He endorsed fellow Democrat and Minnesota Native, Amy Klobuchar for U.S. President in the 2020 US Presidential Election in which he stated that she would have a better shot at the White House than he did when he ran in 1984 and lost to Ronald Reagan.
- Is thus far the only former, non-incumbent Vice President to have been nominated for President on a major party ticket and not win the election.
