In the late 1960s, he founded the House of Gold Music publishing company in Nashville, which helped the careers of Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Dottie West, Alabama, and The Judds.
He teamed up with Buddy Holly in junior high school in Lubbock, Texas, performing in school concerts and radio contests.
