Elaine Crombie delivered the second annual Naidoc Week Lecture at Nida this week, drawing attention to training programs and her own experience as a First Nations creative.
Crombie, a Pitjantjatjara, Warrigmal, South Sea and German-descended actor, singer, songwriter and writer from South Australia, discussed the importance of First Nations people standing together in the arts.
A self-described “older woman in this game”, Crombie has noticed upcoming comedic talent “blitzing past”. But she emphasised there is nothing helpful about looking at newcomers with “side eyes and head tilts”.

Set in the world of motocross, the children’s series follows a group of junior riders that make up the first intake of the MaveriX Academy.

The Natalie Miller Fellowship (Nmf) organisers have appealed for more Indigenous female screen practitioners to apply for the fellowship that provides an annual $20,000 grant for leadership advancement.
Nmf president Sue Maslin lamented the small number of applicants from the Indigenous cohort in a Facebook Live session on Monday with director and Nmf ambassador Jennifer Peedom, Aquarius Films MD Rachel Okine and Nitv acting head Kyas Hepworth.
Established in 2011 to recognise the unique contribution of screen industry pioneer Natalie Miller, the Nmf is open to women with at least five years experience in any screen sector to help them reach their full leadership potential through attachments, internships, secondments and other means.
“We have not had a high level of applications yet from Indigenous women. We really want to make a focus on having Indigenous women applying,” Maslin said.

The ABC and Netflix have co-ordered children’s series MaveriX from Brindle Films, set in the world of junior motocross and due to shoot in Alice Springs in 2021.
Created by Rachel Clements, Sam Meikle and Issac Elliott, the 10 x 30 drama will follow six teens accepted for the first ever MaveriX Academy in Alice, where they are pushed to the limits and given the chance to join a professional racing team.
Clements and Trisha Morton-Thomas will produce the scripts written by Miekle, Fin Edquist, Michelle Offen and Kelly Schilling. The creators are all executive producers with Bernadette O’Mahony.

The short-form series – 6 x 10 minutes – is the result of a partnership between Ludo Studio and 1788 Productions, and was supported by Screen Australia, Screen Territory and Screen Queensland.

In 22 years with Film Finances Australasia, Anni Browning experienced numerous highs and faced a few challenges as the cinema industry ebbed and flowed.
Browning, who has stepped down as MD of the completion bond company but is still a consultant, supported Rachel Perkins’ debut feature Radiance.
She took one of her biggest risks on a Rolf de Heer movie, which she counts as one of her proudest achievements.
The biggest trend during her time has been the proliferation of low budget films, despite the need to pay crews and allocate reasonable money for post- production. Film Finances bonded a lot of films budgeted at $1 million- $1.5 million and one-off feature docs costing as little as $100,000- $200,000.
One thing which has not remained constant is the insurance bond premium. When she started it was as high as 6 per cent of the budget.

These shorts will be used as proof of concept for longer form projects to get traction in the market place, part of building career pathways towards.. storytelling across film, television, online and interactive platforms. The teams will also attend two-day Hot Shops workshops and seminars this month at Screen Australia which will immerse writers, directors and producers in a craft-based learning environment to further their filmmaking skills.

Two Australian short films, Men of the Earth and Faraways, and feature Lore will screen at the 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), one of the largest audience-driven film festivals in the world.
The ten-minute short Men of the Earth, which will also be shown at the upcoming Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France, attempts to explore tribalism and ritual in contemporary society. The film takes the audiences behind a roadwork site and presents the sombre ritual of working men. Men of the Earth is written and directed by Andrew Kavanagh.
