Based on the urban legend known as "The Black-Eyed Kids" and co-starring the iconic Tobin Bell, Let Us In is now on Digital and On Demand via Samuel Goldwyn Films, and we caught up with director/co-writer Craig Moss (the filmmaker behind the Bad Ass films) to discuss the importance of making a scary story that's family-friendly, working with a horror icon, and setting the film against the backdrop of a creepy urban legend.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Craig, and congratulations on Let Us In! How did you and co-writer Joe Callero come up with the idea for this film, and how many drafts of the script did you go through before cameras were ready to roll?

One week in the fall of 2014, the Birmingham Mail reported on alleged sightings of a paranormal phenomenon known as black-eyed children. The paper interviewed paranormal investigator Lee Brickley, who said a woman told him she had seen a spooky child whose eyes were "completely black, no iris, no white, nothing". This urban legend then filled the front pages of papers like the Daily Star in the following days. What was just a story that started on an online mailing list would soon be the cause of frenzy. These “sightings” increased, gaining enough interest for director Craig Moss and co-writer Joe Callero to make a supernatural slasher all about the myth.
As Let Us In explains in its opening frame, these creatures resemble children with pale skin and black eyes who can be seen hitchhiking or on doorsteps of residential homes. These hooded figures appear for ten days at a time,...

Realizing there might be something deeper happening, Emily and Christopher might be up against forces they can't even imagine... The film stars Makenzie Moss, O'Neill Monahan, Sadie Stanley, Eric Callero, Mackenzie Ziegler, and Tobin Bell (aka Mr. Jigsaw). Prolific Machete star Danny Trejo turned 72 this year, a development that doesn’t seem to have even slightly slowed down the dozen or so low-budget productions that IMDb says he’s currently working on. The new partners take the law into their own hands as they clean up the streets. Filmmaker Craig Moss, who helmed ‘Bad Ass,’ returned to direct the sequel. ‘Bad Asses’ was produced by Ben Feingold, Ash Shah and Jim Busfield. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will distribute the film worldwide in early 2014 on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD and digital download. The home release will [ Read More ]

Twilight parody trailer: Twiharder (image: John Gearries and Tanya Zoeller in Twiharder) [See previous post: "Twilight Parody vs. Lionsgate and Summit: $500 Million Lawsuit."] Say what you will about the productions values found in (or missing from) the Twiharder clip below, but you must admit that in the first scene leading lady Tanya Zoeller does a really good imitation of Kristen Stewart’s voice and mannerisms (e.g., lip-biting). And I gotta admit that I found kinda kinky-funny watching Christopher Sean’s use of his abs to stop the bleeding on the forehead of Zoeller’s Stella Pond. Edward Cullen parodist John Gearries, for his part, does a pretty good imitation of John Gilbert in His Glorious Night, repeating "I love you" ad nauseam. Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly’s Singin’ in the Rain, by the way, had Kelly parodying John Gilbert in that early talkie. Now, why didn’t anyone try to stop them? Well, a key reason is that the...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Director/writer: Craig Moss. Cast: Kathryn Fiore, Flip Schultz, Olivia Alexander, Arturo del Puerto, Danny Woodburn, French Stewart, Peter Gilroy, Tyler Phillips, Stephen Kramer Glickman, and Rebecca Ann Johnson. 30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a long title. This title will also clue readers into the genre of the film. This is a spoof, that points fun at films such as Paranormal Actvity, The Dark Knight Rises, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Resident Evil films and many others. 30 Nights... is fairly plotless, but there are a few comedic tidbits to be found here. The story is very simple. A small family moves into a new home that is haunted. The Galen clan installs security cameras to find out what is going on. From here on out,...

Contrary to the apparent belief of the Craig Moss, Jason Friedberg, and Aaron Seltzer’s of the world, a parody isn’t funny just because you took a scene from a popular blockbuster and made it a dick, sex, or fart joke or mixed it with some other pop culture trend. It requires a bit more tact than that. Quite a bit more. The latest offender in this trend of lazy parodies is Craig Moss’s 30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a film that scores zero laughs throughout its 80-minute runtime and which takes the easiest way out with every joke. Imagine watching a movie where a 12-year-old has given a painfully unfunny running commentary, and then turn that commentary into a movie. It’s a test of endurance in stupidity and if you can make it past the first 10 minutes...

On the set of the Kane Hodder/Bill Moseley-starrer Old 37, we got a chance to chat with Olivia Alexander, who plays a mean girl in that movie and a bad-ass one in the new comedy. “It’s called 30 Nights Of Paranormal Activity With The Devil Inside The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo—longest title ever,” says Alexander, who plays the eponymous Girl for writer/director Craig Moss in the film, released by Fox Home Entertainment. “I play a 16-year-old girl who is absolutely having an identity crisis, and she’s in love with her neighbor, who happens to be Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. He’s trying to emancipate my pants, essentially, and the film kind of goes from there. We poked fun at just about everything we possibly could.”

After starting 2013 out on such a bad note with A Haunted House, I thought to myself “Surely things can’t get any worse.” Then I remembered that with all the awful, horribly crafted, exploitative spoof movies out there, there’s someone twelve steps behind them making insultingly cheap spoof movies without a single productive thought behind the whole f*cking production.
At least Marlon Wayans made ballsy calls, has good production, and injects some intelligent goo found in small spurts about his film. Too bad Craig Moss has created one of the worst films in the history of cinema, eviscerating my soul with a thoughtless, brain cell killing comedy not even worth the .99 cent bargain barrel at your local going-out-of-business video store. All titles must go – except 30 Nights Of Paranormal Activity With The Devil Inside The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Honestly Craig Moss, f#ck you for making me write that.

It's a parody, but you'll never guess of what movies.
As horror parodies go, the Scary Movie franchise has been the most prominent over the past decade, but when Scary Movie 5 arrives next year it will be in the unique position of having to follow some horror movie parody competition. In January, A Haunted House will follow Marlon Wayans as one half of a couple that moves into a haunted house and decide to seek help with their paranormal, uh, troubles. Wayans is no stranger to movie parodies, after co-writing and co-starring in the first two Scary Movie installments and 2009's Dance Flick, and his experience is perhaps why the first trailer for A Haunted House seems almost subtle and sophisticated next to the other horror movie parody being released in January, 30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

All hail VOD, the format giving new life to disreputable exploitation films. It was problematic to stock them on DVD shelves next to the likes of “Kangaroo Jack” and “The Chronicles of Riddick.” Now, the cheapest, tackiest, most base thrills are only a click away, allowing an opportunistic indie like “Bad Ass” its moment to shine, giving the perfect level of exposure to this grungy shlockfest with a built-in limited shelf life.
“Bad Ass,” a title that tries and fails to say it all, focuses on the exploits of Frank Vega, a quiet old man settling in Los Angeles and coping with his days winding down. A Vietnam vet who, at this point, has lost everything, he lives in the house vacated by his late mother with an old war buddy named Klondike, both just thankful they still have two legs to stand on. With director Craig Moss’ explosive 2012 action/drama “Bad Ass”, veteran actor Danny Trejo effectively joins the ranks of the “old man versus urban gangsters” genre, a club that includes such notable thespians as Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine, Rutger Hauer, and the immortal Charles Bronson. Although it’s always a lot of fun to watch Trejo pummel folks into the proverbial pavement, his latest fist-driven endeavor doesn’t come close to packing the cinematic punch of its like-minded counterparts. No, “Bad Ass” feels more like something you would’ve expected Pm Entertainment to release back in the mid-90′s. It’s a serviceable adventure, but it’s certainly not Trejo’s best work. Those hoping for another “Machete” will be disappointed the most. Trejo stars as Vietnam veteran Frank Vega, an elderly gentleman with a penchant for scraggly salt-and-pepper beards and fanny packs. Having busted his balls for 40 years selling hotdogs...
