Exclusive: The plight of ‘Confederados’ who left the U.S. for Brazil after the American Civil War will provide the backdrop to Disney drama series Americana.
We’ve learned the streaming series, which is for Disney’s Star+ in Brazil, is shooting in São Paulo with a cast including Den of Thieves and American Violence actor Kaiwi Lyman. São Paolo production house CineFilm is making the show based on scripts from Maurilio Martins and Manuel Moruzzi. Two six-episode seasons have been ordered ahead of a 2024 launch date.
Brazilian actors Caco Ciocler, Andre Ramiro, Bruno Gissoni, Larissa Nunes, Zeze Motta, Thalma de Freitas, David Júnior, Maria Luiza Mendonça, Luciano Quirino, Zahy Tentehar, Lucila Gandolfo, Diego Leske, Arthur Garbe and Ditte Marie le-Fèvreare also part of an ensemble cast.
The series is set in Americana, a municipality in the state of São Paulo, during the late 19th century and follows the Confederates who left the U.

Some bittersweet news for fans of 3%. Netflix just announced the Brazilian TV show will return for a fourth and final season.
The science-fiction drama is set in a "near-future Brazil, where a select few are allowed to join a privileged society after undergoing an intense and competitive process.” The cast includes João Miguel, Bianca Comparato, Vaneza Oliveira, Rodolfo Valente, Michel Gomes, Zezé Motta, and Celso Frateschi.

Gustavo Pizzi's comic drama Loveling topped the Brazilian Academy Awards on Wednesday in a ceremony charged with responses to President Jair Bolsonaro's recent attacks against the film industry.
Premiered in Sundance, Loveling won in six categories, including best film, director and original screenplay for Pizzi and his wife Karine Teles, who also won the best actress award.
The ceremony, held in Sao Paulo's City Theater, featured a series of musical numbers, a tribute to actress-singer Zezé Motta and, most notably, an outspoken response from film professionals to Bolsonaro's quarrel with Brazilian cinema.
