ITV shareholder Carlton Communications said Wednesday that its chief executive, Gerry Murphy, has resigned and will leave his post in February. Murphy is leaving the television arena to take the CEO position at Kingfisher, Europe's biggest retail group. The announcement was made Wednesday morning in a short posting to the London Stock Exchange. Murphy, who will continue in his current role at Carlton until he starts his Kingfisher post in February, is the latest senior executive to quit the ITV network, whose director of programs, David Liddiment, and chief executive, Stuart Prebble, left earlier this year. The network is pinning its hopes of survival on a £2.6 billion ($4 billion) merger between lead shareholders Carlton and Granada. Murphy's departure was a foregone conclusion after his name was conspicuously absent from the executive lineup of the proposed merged ITV group, announced earlier in the month (HR 10/17). Under the new plan, Carlton chairman Michael Green and Granada chairman Charles Allen will run the merged broadcast group.

Shares of the United Kingdom's two largest commercial broadcasters, Carlton Communications and Granada Plc., soared after the companies confirmed that they are at an "advanced stage" in merger negotiations to create a single ITV network. Under the terms of the preliminary proposal presented to the London Stock Exchange on Friday, the companies said Granada shareholders would pay rival Carlton £200 million ($310 million) in cash and take 68% of a combined group, valued at £2.7 billion ($4.2 billion), in which Carlton would hold the balance of shares. A formal announcement is expected within days and will draw an automatic referral to the Competition Commission. In management terms, Granada chairman Charles Allen will become CEO of the new group, while Carlton chairman Michael Green will be the company's chairman. The corporate lineup, which excludes Carlton chief executive Gerry Murphy, lends weight to recent speculation that Murphy is preparing to leave the group. He is not expected to quit until the merger is completed, sources close to Carlton said. Granada chief executive Steve Morrison left the company last month.

LONDON -- Commercial television regulator the Independent Television Commission has asked ITV shareholders Carlton and Granada for more details on how they plan to work together, following the announcement last week that they are seeking closer ties. Carlton chief executive Gerry Murphy said last week the companies planned to create a "virtual enterprise" with cooperation in marketing, promotions, commissioning and back office operations. The regulator confirmed Monday that its chairman, Robin Biggam, will meet with both companies to ensure that the new links do not include plans to combine advertising sales or contravene existing antitrust regulations.
