After the “Thermae Romae” (2014) & “Thermae Romae II” (2016) extravaganza, director Takeuchi Hideki is back on his familiar ground of live action manga adaptation with “Fly Me To The Saitama”. If you thought the Thermae Romae saga or his 2018’s fairy tale “Tonight, At The Movies” was crazy, well … watch this one and think again!
“Fly Me To The Saitama” screened at Udine Far East Film Festival
It is more than 40C in Kumagaya, capital city of Saitama, the Prefecture that is the northern neighbour of Tokyo, and you can literally fry an egg on the concrete. For the Sugawara family, it is a big day as proud Saitanese Dad is driving with Mum and Daughter to the latter’s engagement party. The young woman is looking forward to getting married, especially because the couple has plans to go to live in Tokyo and escape the provincial stigma that hangs on Saitama...

**Massive spoilers for every Godzilla movie, with the exception of the 2014 reboot, and Mothra follow**
August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and...

The police have a reputation to protect.
Picking up where Outrage (2010) left off, Beyond Outrage (2012) goes a bit further. With Otomo (Takeshi Kitano) in prison and the Sanno yakuza family in ascension, the police (particularly Det. Kataoka (Fumiyo Kohinata)) stir the pot by pitting one set of gangsters against another. When Kataoka tries and fails to use the ambitious Tomita (Akira Nakao) to lure the Hanabishi into a war with the Sanno, he goes back to Otomo--a badass killer of the old school--to team up with Kimura (Hideo Nakano)--who, incidentally, stabbed Otomo in jail for killing his (Kimura's) former boss and permanently, hideously scarring his face--to use their mutual grudge against Kato (Tomokazu Miura), the current Chairman of the Sanno (who, incidentally, got to that position by murdering his former boss in the last movie) and bring the Hanabishi into war with the Sanno. It seems a bit complicated,...

When it comes to Venice Film Festival, Japanese director Takeshi Kitano is definitely not a stranger. I’m sure you all remember his Hana Bi from 1997 (for which he recevied the Golden Lion), or 2003 Zatoichi project (Silver Lion statue).
Well, guess what, Kitano is now back In Competition with his completely new project, titled Outrage Beyond. And, in case this sounds like it has something to do with Kitano’s Outrage movie from last year’s Cannes film festival – relax, you’re not tripping – it’s just a sequel to the original story…
So, this time we have the Sanno crime family all grown into a huge organization, expanding its power into politics and legitimate big business. The Sanno’s upper ranks are now dominated by young executives, and the old-guard members are penting up resentment while being pushed to the sidelines.
This vulnerable spot in the Sanno hierarchy is...

A sequel has been announced for “All About My Dog” (Inu no Eiga), a 2005 compilation of short films about people’s relationships with dogs. It was first released in mini theaters and grew to become vastly popular among dog lovers. The sequel is titled Inu to Anata no Monogatari: Inu no Eiga and will reportedly consist of six segments. The cast will include Nao Omori, Nanako Matsushima, Masaaki Uchino, Kie Kitano, Akira Nakao, and Atsuko Takahata.
The original featured actors like Misaki Ito, Manami Konishi, and Aoi Miyazaki—so the sequel had a lot to live up to in terms of casting.
Nao Omori, who recently gained some added fame for starring in the financial thriller Hagetaka, and TV drama mainstay Nanako Matsushima will play a couple in their segment. This marks the pair’s first time acting together, but Omori claims portraying a couple felt completely natural and being...
