As with any time I try to explain a massive figure in Indian film to the uninitiated, the temptation rises quickly to compare director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to someone in Hollywood.
And, as with any time I actually make these comparisons, everything falls short. Bhansali depicts spectacle evocative of the work of Baz Luhrmann, but even that is a pale imitation (no disrespect to either). There is no one literally anywhere in the world creating cinema with the scale and grandeur that Bhansali has cultivated as his signature, a style so distinct that his own peers pay homage to it while he’s still alive and working.
But at the top of IndieWire’s conversation about Bhansali’s career, he’s quick to shake the larger-than-life visual splendor of his creations, emphasizing — as writer, director and producer, among his many hats — that the stories themselves evoke that scope.

A tale of magical realism slowly stripped of its magic, Raam Reddy’s gorgeously photographed, politically subversive “The Fable” trades in idyllic memories, but reveals their hidden dimensions. Set in 1989, on a lush Himalayan orchard in northeastern India, Reddy’s second feature follows a family of four, whose patriarch runs the once-colonial estate with the help of local villagers in his employ. Everything seems pristine and picture perfect until the sudden discovery of a single burnt apple blossom tree, followed by more mysteriously torched bushes the following day, leading to fears and suspicions that trickle downhill.
The film’s unbroken opening shot goes quickly from unassuming to striking. It follows estate owner Dev (Manoj Bajpayee) along his morning routine, through his house with his wife Nandini (Priyanka Bose), his precocious son Juju (Awan Pookot) and his lively dogs. The camera then tracks him to a workshop outside, where Dev straps...

Actor Dharmesh Vyas, who will be playing a pivotal role in the upcoming show ‘Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai’, said that portraying Hemraj has been a monumental challenge, as well as an opportunity for him to create awareness and build a conversation around malpractice like dowry.
The thought-provoking show, follows Nandini’s journey (essayed by Meera Deosthale), who is deeply rooted in tradition but also raises objections to any belief that disregards the dignity of a woman.
This show puts the spotlight on the prevailing ‘Dahej Pratha’ that plagues our society, with Nandini confronting her father-in-law, Hemraj Ratanshi (portrayed by Dharmesh), and making a powerful demand – “mujhe mera dahej waapas chahiye.”
Dharmesh embodies the role of Hemraj Ratanshi, Nandini’s father-in-law, who is conservative and a reflection of the patriarchal society.

ReviewThough actors including Santosh Sobhan and Malavika try their best to make the story engaging, the performances alone cannot compensate for the wafer-thin plotline.Director Nandini Reddy’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule starts off with a unique and promising sequence, telling the tale of two families and a conflict between them over a coffee estate. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much time for the film to slip into a cliche trope that becomes the focal point of the story, causing you to lose all interest. The only motivation to watch the film from here on is curiosity — will Nandini be able to redeem the film with her own take on a story that has been done to death in the Telugu film industry? The film’s protagonist, Rishi (Santosh Sobhan), is free-spirited and believes in ‘living in the moment’, a luxury he can afford because of his rich father. His father,...

When last we saw the title character of Mani Ratnam’s epic “Ponniyin Selvan” saga, the real-life prince who would expand the Chola empire from South India all the way to the Ganges in the north was drowning as he crossed from Lanka to India. Instead of picking up at that cliffhanger, the action-packed second installment rewinds a few decades to focus on different characters, before circling back to reveal the fate of Jayam Ravi’s title character, also known as Arunmozhi Varman.
“Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two” starts by filling in the backstory of how Arunmozhi’s older brother, Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram), fell for Nandini (Aishwariya Rai Bachchan), an orphaned girl living with a priest family at the local temple. The royal family disapproved of him marrying a girl whose antecedents weren’t known, and so she was chased off. The story then picks up to when reports...

KollywoodWhile many fans of Ponniyin Selvan have made their peace with the film adaptation, others are upset that some of the most important connections and twists in the novel were dropped.Lyca Productions*Major spoilers ahead Even as a seventy-year wait to see Ponniyin Selvan on screen has come to an end, Ps 2, the second part of Mani Ratnam’s adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel, has led to a lot of discussions on the creative liberties taken with it. Mani Ratnam co-wrote the two-part film with Elango Kumaravel and Jeyamohan, and as was only to be expected, the team has done away with several episodes and characters from the novel to condense the vast material into two films. Ponniyin Selvan 1 was all about introducing the audience to the plethora of vivid characters that stand behind the giant walls of the fortresses and palaces, making plans to remain powerful for ages to come. One of the key players in making sure these plans are put into action is Nandini Devi, the wife of the powerful Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar. Nandini Devi did not just have qualms against the Chola Kingdom; she had a deep-rooted hatred for the men who ruled this kingdom for a very definite reason. Mani Ratnam not only managed to portray the aspect of Nandini being the most beautiful woman but her ability to use her beauty as a weapon is showcased with such an intensity that has seldom been explored in cinema. But why does Nandini carry such hatred for the Chola Kingdom?
The first movie only lets the audience know of the hatred Aditha and Nandini have for each other.

Now that both Ponniyin Selvan films are out, some characters can be taken apart to understand their morals and mindset when it comes to them as a person. Arunmozhi Varman, the youngest prince of the mighty Chola Emperor, is the prince no one expected to be their leader. It is always the unexpected; the person who never wanted to lead, who never wanted the power, ends up becoming the leader of the pack and doing a much better job than the person seeking power. Arunmozhi Varman turns out to be that person in the film. The prince, who was always a warrior and a diplomat of sorts, knew how to bring people to his side, making them allies of the kingdom.
Arunmozhi Varman was introduced in the second half of Ponniyin Selvan Part 1, where he is already invading Lanka’s ‘King’ and making sure to make the Buddhists of Lanka their allies.

The first part of Ponniyin Selvan was released in October, and it ended on a note that would have audiences eager to come back to theaters and witness the fate of these characters as the story moves forward in the second installment. The movie ended with the bad news of Arunmozhi Varman drowning in the sea along with Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. The news of his supposed death shattered the people living in the capital, especially the King and his family. The conspirators did not see this as bad news at all. Perhaps they wanted this, especially Nandini Devi, who aimed to destroy the Chola Kingdom. Will her plan from here on be put into motion? Is it possible for her to destroy the kingdom from within?

Ponniyin Selvan 2
Mani Ratnam’s sprawling visually plush two-part Ponniyin Selvan has ended. I say this with a sigh of relief. The downpour of plot twists and torrent of characters, all abiding by no fixed law of existence, left me exhausted, in a good way.
Where but in Mani Ratnam’s epic excursion would you get such a torrent of events. It is as though the Gods have conspired to lay bare a treasury of lost events from a time when dynasties fought their battles with the sword and didn’t mind squandering their might in a game of thorns plucked from man’s (and in this case woman’s) very basic need to possess what is rightfully not theirs.
From the cornucopia of characters it is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Nandini, the Queen designate whose hunger for power is matched by her anger at the loss of love , which stands out.

ReviewIf Kalki’s literary magnum opus belongs to Arunmozhi Varman, Mani Ratnam’s film belongs to Aditha Karikalan. And who can resist Vikram when he’s at the top of his game?Courtesy: Twitter/ Lyca ProductionsThe first part of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, co-written with Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel, began with Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) defeating the Rashtrakutas but refusing to behead their king. He circles the king on his horse, but when the moment arrives, his face clouds with a memory. He knocks off his headgear instead of his head. This is a battle-ready, aggressive prince but his rage is directed most at himself. The love he once harboured has twisted itself into hate. The first film ended with Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) falling into the sea, but the second film doesn’t begin from there. Instead, it goes back to that love story once again. A young Karikalan...

Mani Ratnam’s larger-than-life epic recreation of Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan is concluding. Part one of the two-part movie was received with great admiration for sticking to the plot points in the book. Though I have not read the book myself, the movie as a screenplay did justice to all the characters and kept me hooked till the end. With Part 2 just a few days away from release, it is interesting to see all the characters coming back to life in the grandest manner possible. Mani Ratnam’s eye for detail must be acknowledged here, and the first movie left quite an impact on me as a cinephile and a sucker for historical fiction. It ended at a point where the film created a genuine buzz among the filmgoers about what would happen in the second installment. The wait is about to end, but before that, let us talk about...

KollywoodA Gen Z reader of Kalki's literary magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ pens her thoughts on the women characters who drive the story forward, Mani Ratnam's adaptation of them to celluloid, and her anticipations for the sequel.Courtesy: Twitter/ Lyca ProductionsWhen veteran Tamil filmmaker Mani Ratnam decided to finally translate Kalki's literary magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan to celluloid, a long-pending dream project of Kollywood, fans were doing cartwheels in excitement. Amid euphoric discussions about the music and the grand ensemble cast, what had me looking forward to the movie the most was the story’s unforgettable women characters — all etched into the hearts of readers for different reasons — and the prospect of this ace director adapting them to screen. Mani Ratnam, to his credit, has created some of the most headstrong women characters in Tamil cinema — Divya (Revathi) from Mouna Raagam and Ok Kanmani’s Tara (Nithya Menen) immediately come to mind.

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who is gearing up for the second part of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, was spotted arriving for a media event in the city on Tuesday. The actress chose a traditional Indian attire for the event. She wore an ivory coloured anarkali suit with shimmery embellishments and a matching dupatta. She kept her long tresses open and rounded off her look with a statement emerald neckpiece.
In the film, Aishwarya plays dual roles of Nandini – the Queen of Pazhuvoor and Mandakini – the aunt of Poonguzhali. The film is based on author Kalki’s eponymous novel. The first part of the film dramatises the early life of Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman, who would become the renowned emperor Rajaraja I.
Ever since its publication in 1955, a film adaptation of the novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ had been explored by several Tamil filmmakers. However, it never materialised due to financial constraints.
