- Won two Tony Awards as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical): in 1951 for "Call Me Madam" and in 1959 for "Goldilocks."
- Has one son Russell and two grandchildren.
- In 1962, he was signed to star in a TV series about a Maine minister called "Boone Bay Harbor". Although at least one script and 26 plot outlines for the proposed series were written, the proposed pilot for the series was never filmed.
- In 1959, Russell Nype and Leonard Stone tied for the Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Musical. Russell won for "Goldilocks" and Leonard won for "Redhead." Theirs was the second of 10 ties to occur at the Tonys.
