In a major step forward for the still-nascent video game unionizing movement, hundreds of development team members at massively multiplayer online role-playing game giant World of Warcraft have unionized.
A majority of workers voted to join a union aligned with the Communications Workers of America in a contest that took place between June 24 and July 23, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The Cwa now reps 1,750-plus game workers at Microsoft.
“We are honored to welcome the workers of the World of Warcraft development team to Cwa. We look forward to signing a collective bargaining agreement with Microsoft that improves conditions for workers,” said Cwa Local 9510 president Peter O’Brien. “The employees at World of Warcraft are gaining the backing of thousands of members across the region who will stand in solidarity with them as they bargain their first contract.”

Cutting edge French director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma has been appointed as president of the jury at the Giornate degli Autori (aka Venice Days), a sidebar to the Venice Film Festival. She will preside over a special jury made up of 27 young European cinephiles present in a campus. “[Sciamma] has thoroughly upended the basic structure of our society and masterfully created new images and new memories. With her latest film, ‘Petite Maman,’ she has provided further proof that the prevailing canon of film production can indeed be challenged,” said Venice Days’ artistic director Gaia Furrer. Sciamma’s earlier credits include: “Bande de filles” in 2014; “Tomboy” in 2011 and “Naissance des Pieuvres” in 2009. The appointment is a homecoming of sorts for the director of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” ever since she was shortlisted for the 2014 Lux Prize at 27 Times Cinema, the initiative organized by Giornate degli Autori, the...

Paramount-owned British network Channel 5, Australia’s Network 10 and Fremantle are looking to a post-Neighbours future and working on a primetime thriller from Neighbours exec Jason Herbison, starring Stay Close actor Jo Joyner.
Filming will get underway shortly in Australia on four-parter Riptide, which will follow Alison (Joyner), whose life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. It quickly becomes obvious there is more to the story than meets the eye as she sets out to investigate his disappearance.
Joyner will play the lead and Herbison created the show. He was an exec on Channel 5/Network 10 miniseries Lie With Me and Neighbours, the soap produced by Fremantle for Channel 5 and Network 10’s (and streamer 10 Peach) that is about to end after three-and-a-half decades, as the UK network pushes further into original drama such as Riptide.
Joining Joyner is Ciarán Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O’Brien, Ally Fowler (Wentworth), Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek and Yazeed Dahar, and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.
“Lie With Me proved incredibly popular with our viewers and I’m looking forward to expanding our drama slate even further, working hand in hand with our production partners Fremantle Australia and Network 10,” said Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment, Unscripted, Channel 5 & Paramount+.

People become their own kind of monster. Spotlight Pictures has released the first trailer for the indie post-apocalyptic thriller titled What Still Remains, from writer/director Josh Mendoza. We've been getting quite a few of these indie post-apocalyptic films recently, and this one already reminds me of all the others. Lulu Antariksa stars a woman struggling to survive in a world long-since destroyed by disease. When a lonely traveler offers her a place in his community, she must decide if the promise of a better life is worth the risk of trusting him. Also stars Liam Hemsworth lookalike Colin O'Donoghue, plus Dohn Norwood, Peter O'Brien, Mimi Rogers, Jeff Kober, Roshon Fegan, Siena Goines, Chris Ellis, and Tobias Jelinek. This unfortunately doesn't look unique or good in any way. But happy to share the trailer anyway. "So what do we do?" "We fight!" Paramount has released a trailer for the young adult sci-fi adaptation titled Maximum Ride, directed by Jay Martin, about six orphan kids who are genetically cross-bred with avian DNA. This gives them the ability to fly, and they band together to figure out the "diabolical, scientific secrets of how they came to exist". Yep, it's as bad as it sounds. Starring Allie Marie Evans, Patrick Johnson, Lyliana Wray, Luke Gregory Crosby, Gavin Lewis, Tetona Jackson, Zayne Emory, Peter O'Brien & Carrie Wampler. As expected, this looks very cheesy and designed specifically for the "young adult" audience, so tread carefully. The effects don't even look good and the villain seems pretty awful, too. It was the global financial crisis that inspired filmmaker John Duigan to write his latest film. The director, whose last Australian film was Sirens back in 1993, found himself reading an increasing number of articles about the impact of the economic downturn and how the rise in the cost of university fees and living expenses had seen a number of students picking up work in the sex industry.

The Scariest Doctor Who Yet! So promised the creaky Doctor Who Hype Machine when promoting the penultimate Tenth Doctor escapade, The Waters Of Mars. The Hype Machine loves this turn of phrase, so much so that it seems to make every alternate story “The Scariest Yet”. I mean, the recent Impossible Astronaut two-parter was touted as The Scariest Yet, even though it wasn't that long after The Waters Of Mars. Well if slow-moving skull headed men in suits is your scary bag, fill your boots. Heaven alone knows what would have happened if they described the 13th and 14th seasons in this fashion: “The Talons Of Weng-Chiang! The scariest story yet! Well since The Robots Of Death anyway...”

Warner Bros. has been on a tear in the past few days, buying material for new films and/or setting up screenwriters to develop projects for the studio. After the break, we've got info on the following three projects, each of which is quite a bit different from the others: The David Dobkin script Arthur & Lancelot, which (as you'd guess) is a new telling of the Arthurian legend, only with a new spin. While we're not likely to see James Bond and Jason Bourne throw down against each other on the big screen anytime soon, we're getting something that's kind of close — a collaboration between "Bond" director and "Bourne" author in "The Chancellor Manuscript."
According to Variety, "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster is attached to direct "The Chancellor Manuscript," based on the novel by the late "Bourne" mastermind Robert Ludlum, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. Peter O'Brien will write the script based on Ludlum's political thriller.
DiCaprio would presumably play Peter Chancellor, the author of a novel about lawmakers being blackmailed into changing United States policies.
In a stranger than fiction twist, it turns out that this scheme is very real, setting the conspirators on the loose to track down the novelist and silence him for good.

Marc Forster ( Quantum of Solace , Finding Neverland ) is attached to direct The Chancellor Manuscript for Paramount, says Variety . Peter O'Brien will adapt the Robert Ludlum political thriller. The following is how the publisher describes the book: Did J. Edgar die a natural death?... or was he murdered? Inver Brass.a group of high-minded and high-placed intellectuals who see a monstrous threat to the country in Hoover's unethical use of his scandal-ridden private files. They decide to do away with him.quietly, efficiently, with no hint of impropriety. Until best-selling thriller writer Peter Chancellor stumbles onto information that makes his precious books like harmless fairy tales. Hot off of Quantum of Solace, Marc Forster is now set to direct The Chancellor Manuscript --- an adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller of the same name. The film is a potential starring vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio (who's also producing), and Peter O'Brien has been tasked with adapting the screenplay. The story concerns an author named Peter Chancellor who writes a novel about political types that are blackmailed into altering national policy. His manuscript is then discovered by operatives who mistakenly think he has uncovered their plot. Hijinks (of the violent variety) ensue. O'Brien's screenplay for Unlocked was placed on the 2008 Black List, which bodes well for this project. That film's plot: A female CIA interrogator is duped into getting a terrorist to provide key information to the wrong side, thrusting her into the middle of a plot to plan a devastating biological attack in London. Clearly, he must...

Paramount has homed in on a director for the adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller they spent $4 million buying. Marc Forster, fresh from directing Quantum Of Solace, will feel at home directing a political thriller in The Chancellor Manuscript.
After the success of the Bourne films, the studio is eager to get things moving and has made a choice for a new scriptwriter, Peter O'Brien. The book focuses on an author, Peter Chancellor, who writes a conspiracy novel about Washington decision-makers being blackmailed into changing Us policies.
The unsuspecting author, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, does not know that he is far off from the truth. When some operatives get a copy of his manuscript, they fear that their plans will be revealed and set on hunting down the author.

After shelling out $4 million to buy the rights in 2005, Paramount has finally locked in a possible director for its adaptation of Robert Ludlum's political thriller The Chancellor Manuscript. And that director? Quantum Of Solace's Marc Forster. The studio has also nabbed Peter O'Brien to write a new script based on the book, which focuses on an author who writes a conspiracy novel about Washington power brokers being blackmailed into changing Us policies.Trouble is, he's closer to the truth than he knows, and when some operatives get a copy of his manuscript, they figure he's about to reveal their plan and try to hunt him down.Adding to Paramount's urgency in getting the film moving along (aside from the fact that Ludlum is seen as a hot property given the success of the Bourne adventures) is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star as novelist Peter Chancellor.

Hosted by comedian Eddie Perfect, the 11th If Awards saw an impressive list of presenters this year, including Kirk Pengilly, Peter O'Brien, Jacqueline McKenzie, Megan Gale, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Filmink friends Sam Worthington and Scott Hicks.
