Matt Phelan's The Storm In The Barn has become the first graphic novel to be handed the Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction. Established in 1982 by celebrated author Scott O'Dell, the accolade celebrates historical fiction for young people written by Us citizens, released by a Us publisher and set in South, Central or North America. The decision to hand the prize to Phelen was met with controversy. Critics have claimed that The Storm In The Barn does not qualify for the award due to its fantasy elements.
