- He was born in the Irish Republic, and raised by his grandparents in Surrey after his parents separated. His lifetime love affair with horse racing began in 1927 when, as a small boy, he heard his first horse racing radio commentary. A year later he had a sixpenny each-way bet on Tipperary Tim in the Grand National at Aintree. His small investment paid off handsomely as his horse won at odds of 100/1.
- He was race commentator for 50 Grand Nationals and around 14,000 races during his career. He was racing correspondent of the Daily Express for 36 years, and also worked for the Press Association.
