'Nicotina,' 'Misterio' top Mexico's Ariel nominations
MEXICO CITY -- Heist movie "Nicotina" and treasure quest film "El Misterio del Trinidad" fared best Wednesday night, garnering 12 and 10 nominations, respectively, for the 46th annual Ariel awards. All told, 15 pictures will vie for Mexico's top film prizes. The red carpet will roll out at Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts, where the Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences, with 54 voting members, will select the winners March 30. "Amores Perros" producer Altavista Films, which has four movies in the running this year, came out on top Wednesday night as the company's "Nicotina", co-starring "Y Tu Mama Tambien"'s Diego Luna, won noms for best actress, actor and original screenplay. Surprisingly, Luna, one of Mexico's most sought-after actors, did not make the grade. Luna plays a hacker who becomes entangled in the aftermath of a jewelry heist. "El Misterio del Trinidad", a Mexico-Spain-Puerto Rico co-production, nabbed 10 noms, including best picture, director, actor and original screenplay. Eduardo Palomo, who died in November after a heart attack, is up for best actor. "Misterio" was his last film. Palomo plays Juan, a man in search of a sunken treasure, as he tries to understand his past. "Y Tu Mama Tambien" scribe Carlos Cuaron co-wrote the story.
