- Served as an aviator in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I.
- Was Director of Dance Music for the BBC, 1928 to 1932 and 1941 to 1946. During the 1950's and 60's, worked for the BBC as a disc jockey.
- Led several successful dance bands during the 1920's and 30's, their complement varying from 6 to 20 musicians. They were showcased on radio and in British films. Payne's tag line was "Pleasure Without Payne". His was the first band to entertain troops in France in 1939.
