He opened The Palomino Club in North Hollywood in 1949. The club was
open seven days a week, and on Monday nights, after the closing time,
it was "open stage" to some of the most famous jazz musicians in the
country. He served black eyed peas, cornbread and buttermilk to all of
those in attendance.
