- First came into vaudeville prominence as a partner with Frank Salt, calling themselves "Salt & Pepper". They made it to Broadway.

- Started on stage in a song and dance comedy act with his sisters Helen and Winnie Mae and younger brother Truett. It didn't last very long.
- Lifelong friends with Bob Hope. They worked on radio shows together, he went on tour with Hope's USO shows, appeared on a few of his TV specials, and had small roles in several of his films, including Road to Singapore (1940), My Favorite Spy (1951), Son of Paleface (1952), Off Limits (1952) and The Seven Little Foys (1955).
- Married three times, he was once engaged to Ruby Keeler. His first wife was actress Ginger Rogers. She was 17 at the time and he was nine years older. His third wife, Dawn Stanton, was a former Ziegfeld dancer.
