- The director and film pioneer Franz Porten first made an education as an artistic ladler. But soon afterwards he took lessons as an opera singer and it followed numerous appearances on different stages both as a singer and actor. He went on tour through whole Germany in the next decades. Finally he came to Berlin where he entered the new media film.
- His last movies as a director came in the 10s into being, among them "Karl der Grosse" (1911), "Bubi, der Unverbesserliche" (1915) and "Tyrannenherrschaft" (1916).
- Besides his activity as a director Franz Porten also appeared as an actor in some early movies and he also wrote the screenplay for several movies.

- Henny Porten, daughter of Franz Porten, became one of the most popular German silent movies stars later. Rosa Porten, sister of Henny and daughter of Franz, often worked together with her father as a screenwriter and director and they used the pseudonym Dr. R. Portegg.
