Robert Alvarez and Adrian Rivas both started playing their respective instruments — guitar and drums — at the age of 12. They shared a love of rock, especially the heavier kind, like grunge and metal. And, years later, each received the same devastating medical diagnosis: a brain tumor.
Rivas and Alvarez hadn’t met by the time they were individually considering treatment options. But their common experience would lead them to play music together under very special circumstances.
Alvarez was in high school when he began to suffer debilitating migraines, he tells Rolling Stone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday mourned the demise of ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas, calling him the “beacon of Indian music”. In his tribute to the departed soul, the Pm said Pankaj Udhas’ death leaves a void in the music world that can never be filled.
Pm Modi shared pictures with Pankaj Udhas, and wrote on X, “We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul. He was a beacon of Indian music, whose melodies transcended generations.”
“I recall my various interactions with him over the years. His departure leaves a void in the music world that can never be filled. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti”
Interestingly, Panjkaj Udhas’ family is from Rajkot, and he grew up in the city, and Pm Modi just celebrated his first electoral win from there in 2002.

Overtly, Kirtima from Killer Soup is the other woman. She’s meant to be the antagonist in some ways, especially in Swathi’s eyes. However, she’s just a girl trying to make it in this cruel world, you know? Kirtima has all the qualities that are considered admirable in a woman. She’s intelligent, ambitious, good with numbers, knows how to cook, she’s got the looks, of course, and she’s got a hidden talent! Kalaripayattu. Okay, well, it’s not really a hidden talent; everyone knows she performs it; I just felt like gift-wrapping it. I suppose since Swathi has Umesh, Kirtima might’ve been the right match for Prabhu. While Swathi brought out the worst in the man—those burps were so annoying!—Kirtima brought out a more caring side of him. I might be going off on a tangent, and of course, it’s just an affair and whatnot,...

While Killer Soup follows the story of Swathi, a woman who wants to start her own restaurant, I believe there are many parallels between her and Appu’s story. Yes, it’s a murder mystery where a dozen people die all around Swathi, seemingly just by existing near her. It’s also about her passionate ambition to open this restaurant that she’s been dreaming of for years. In an ideal world, by the time we get to the timeline of the show, Swathi should’ve been well into running her restaurant, seeing as she had been married for 20 years and her husband is the reason she’s come into money and luxury. While he claims he’s given her everything she’s ever wanted, he’s never bothered helping her achieve her biggest dream (waste fellow). Now Appu is Arvind’s daughter. We can assume she’s at least 25 years younger than Swathi,...

Killer Soup is Netflix’s latest in its piping roster of thriller shows (as well as shows about food). The Indian show is an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors-style story that is fun and fast-paced. At its heart, the show is about Swathi Shetty, a wife, a mother, and a woman who aspires to start her own restaurant in the center of her town, Mainjur. She’s wanted this since she can remember, and was promised by her husband that it would eventually happen for her; however, 20 years have passed and it’s all still the same. For now, Swathi’s story is quite a common one in the Indian household scenario. You’d imagine she would’ve let go of her dream with all these years gone by, but she’s very hopeful still. Her journey has only just begun, and something tremendously bizarre is about to happen that...

Netflix’s big New Year Indian release is Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee’s Killer Soup. This eat-the-rich thriller-dramedy is a fun and engaging show about a couple that gets dragged into a comedy of errors murder mystery. Swathi and Prabhu are a happily married, rich couple living in the small town of Mainjur, Tamil Nadu. This is a family that thrives on deceit, and all they really care about is who has the upper hand. Swathi’s big dream is to have her very own restaurant someday. 20 years have passed, and this dream still remains a dream, despite the luxurious lifestyle her husband has been maintaining. The Abhishek Chaubey directorial is a unique blend of South and North. A Hindi-language show based in Tamil Nadu that brings out the essence of Indian indie-thriller with a comedic element. It’s been a while since we saw something like this,...

Killer Soup is India’s answer to the “eat the rich,” “let’s use food as a metaphor for life” situation happening across world cinema. In the last year, I’ve seen food shows in a dozen languages that fall under the morbid-thriller genre that we all love so much. Given the situation, India needed to buck up, and here we are with the Konkona Sen Sharma-Manoj Bajpayee starrer Killer Soup. Prabhakar Shetty, aka Prabhu, and Swathi Shetty are a happily married couple who live in Mainjur, Tamil Nadu. They’re a fairly rich family with a son who’s moved out for college. The show begins with Swathi making what seems to be her delectable “paya soup.” However, immediately after receiving a bowl of it, Prabhu is disgusted. He discards it when Swathi isn’t looking, and she steals some money from his wallet simultaneously. This scene depicts their relationship perfectly.

Kannada superstar Rakshit Shetty is back with the highly anticipated part 2 of Sapta Sagaradaache Ello. Unlike the norm, this sequel comes out within 2 months of the release of Side A, avoiding a long waiting time for fans. The film is both heartfelt and thrilling and provides a fitting conclusion to the epic story of Priya and Manu. In 2011, Manu was left shattered after being separated from Priya for good. His hope for the future is completely taken away from him, leaving him with no will to live and many enemies to make. 10 years later, Manu is set free amidst the pandemic. Although he’s still very much in love with Priya, she’s married and has her own family to look after. Manu’s only mission is to make sure that Priya is happy, whatever life she’s leading.

In 2021, Manu finally gets out of prison, straight into the pandemic. He’s got nothing to his name except the memory of Priya and the one cassette with her voice recording on it. With the help of one of his prison mates, he sets out to make a new life, even though he’s still very much swimming in the sea which is his love for Priya. Immediately, Side B starts off with a bang, and there’s no time wasted as we dive straight into Manu’s new story. Although Manu is stuck on Priya and wants to rekindle his lost love with her, there’s a new woman in his life, Surabhi. Side A was the calm before the storm, whereas the 2023 film, Sapta Sagaradaache Ello—Side B is the storm itself. The film is much faster in pace than the first one, but contrary to my expectations...

ReviewThough Raavana Kottam has an interesting plotline and fitting background score that maintains tension, there is little to redeem the no-nuance script. The film falls into a trap of cliches while trying hard to give a hot take on caste discrimination. YouTube ScreengrabIn one of the opening shots of Raavana Kottam, you see Bose (played by Prabhu) at the door of his house with nine other faux heads. The heads are actually photos hung in Bose’s house and belong to various leaders like Dr Br Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar, late Ltte chief Prabhakaran, Periyar, and Subhash Chandra Bose, among others. This clever camera trick featuring an ideologically varied medley of leaders sets the tone for the confusing politics employed in the film. Written and directed by Vikram Sugumaran, Raavana Kottam features Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Anandhi, and Prabhu in lead roles. The movie is set in the ‘caste-free’ utopian village of Enathi in the Ramnad district.

KollywoodThe film takes a jibe at Lakshmy's 'Solvathellam Unmai' and also has a dialogue - "A good film Vijay has acted in? Which one is that?" Tnm Staff aruvi main 750_0-compressed.jpgTamil film Aruvi has opened to rave reviews and great word of mouth. However, not everyone is happy. Actor, director and TV show host Lakshmy Ramakrishnan has taken umbrage to the film since it takes a jibe at her show Solvathellam Unmai. The film has actor Lakshmi Gopalaswamy playing a TV show host for a programme called Solvathellam Sathyam. The host is shown to be insensitive and hypocritical. Lakshmy Ramakrishnan took to Twitter to express her displeasure about how the film allegedly portrays her and the TV show. She asked if the director or anyone from his family had appeared on Solvathellam Unmai to know so much about the show. In the film, Aruvi is a HIV positive person who is mistreated by the TV show host. Lakshmy tweeted that many such persons had participated on the show, suggesting that they were treated with respect and not how the film had portrayed it. She also said that Aruvi was a "feminist film made by cheap & personal attacks on another woman." She further said that while Slumdog Millionaire had based a part of the film on Amitabh Bachchan's game show, people were not made to think that this was how the show runs. She also challenged the makers of the film to face her on camera and answer her queries. Lakshmy asserted that she was doing her work with social responsibility and that it was wrong to "belittle and demean" her for it. You have participated in #Su?Kallakaadhalaa?! Or , may be the director has or his family members:). That is why he knows so much about the show:) https://t.co/7obb3qc02x — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 We will show you what it takes and what really happened when a HIV patient participated in the show! Not one , many! https://t.co/ZUUVbU9AjU — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 We can't reveal they are HIV positive, in the show, but, we live in a state where some fools think make believe characters in cinema are true!!! So why not show real characters & incidents, which cannot be revealed in show, through cinema?! https://t.co/ZUUVbU9AjU — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 The Director would have seen such things happening in shows & channel he worked for! he doesn't have the b.... to spoof his own channel. #Su is easy target to become popular & some quick bucks! feminist film made by cheap & personal attacks on another woman! What greatness! https://t.co/7obb3qc02x — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 Remember #Slumdog ? Based in a popular show? They did not associate or believe that BIg B actually does what is shown in the film to his participants! But fools like this one, believe the Director's imagination is what actually happens! https://t.co/OeMKdwdtZu — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 If the makers/ director has the b.... let them face me , live on camera, and answer my queries, good opportunity for publicity for the film! Can any of the popular channels including @ZeeTamil , come forward to do this? https://t.co/OeMKdwdtZu — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) December 19, 2017 if someone has a problem with the format, they should address that! The Rj Balaji-Gv Prakash film Kadavul Irukan Kumaru also mocked Solvathellam Unmai, angering the actor-director. Meanwhile, Aruvi has also drawn flak from Vijay fans for a scene that mocks the actor's films – the dialogue, "A good film that Vijay has acted in? Which one is that?" has irked some of them who've claimed that it was unnecessary for the film to take such a potshot at their star. They have alleged that Aruvi is a copy of an Egyptian film Asmaa while others have said it is not so. #Asmaa film unofficial remake #Aruvi https://t.co/9d1vPLvhNF — Vijayism (@karth1sofficial) December 18, 2017 @amrmsalama Thanks for Asmaa Please watch our Indian version, "Aruvi". Film ReviewLike its title suggests, ‘Aruvi’ is a devastating cascade of emotional highs and lows.Rakesh Mehar aruvi_poster.jpgIf we should talk about films with small budgets but big hearts in Kollywood, few hit the nail on the head like Aruvi, starring debutante actor Aditi Balan. But don’t let the mention of big hearts fool you into thinking that this is an overstuffed sentimental drama. At times Aruvi is downright savage in its observational criticism. After all, how many other Tamil movies can you think of that will talk about middle class life as one big consumption machine designed to further enrich the richest classes of society? From the start, the film directed by Arun Prabhu is miles ahead of most of its compatriots. In an industry where women still function mostly as appendages to aging heroes, Aruvi lavishes all its attention on its female protagonist, a young woman named Aruvi who’s determined not to let society dictate how she lives her life. Losing control of her life for no fault of her own, Aruvi becomes a captor herself through a suddenly escalating set of circumstances. (It’s impossible to reveal any more of the story here without giving away many significant spoilers). Aruvi’s story unfolds much like living memory, going back and forth through her current traumas to the warm embrace of her innocent childhood and back through the sudden tragedies that led to the fall. Through all this, the girl and young woman is frail but powerful, light-hearted but with a deep melancholy that grows through the film. But, like Aruvi herself, the film is unsentimental and clear-headed almost till the very end. So, it doesn’t shy away from showing Aruvi’s rough edges, such as when she puts down a fellow student who begs her for a sanitary napkin so she can avoid the traumatic embarrassment of staining her school clothes. Despite this clear-headedness, the film is not overly harsh, and retains a warm and loving tone throughout. What’s most exciting about the film is how crisp and economical it is. Particularly in the first half, the film lets each picture tell a thousand words, its characters speaking only when absolutely necessary. Most excitingly, it uses creative montages to speed through the lulls between its high moments, and effectively avoids traps where the script could have easily stumbled. Especially the first montage, of Aruvi’s sun-kissed beautiful childhood, accompanied by the wonderful acapella rendition of “Kukkotti Kunaatti”, tugs at the heartstrings so perfectly. When the film does speak, it’s with devastating effect. For instance, in the early parts of the film, Aruvi’s budding friendship with a trans woman (Anjali Varathan) refuses to make any sort of fuss about the latter’s gender identity. The only exception is a line where she says, “These men will even ignore Aishwarya Rai on the street, but they will never leave us alone. Are we that beautiful?” There’s also the great takedown the film does of Tamil talk shows like Solvadhellam Unmai and the moral high-ground that their anchors routinely take. But if the script and direction are wonderful, it is Aditi who fills the film with soul. An amazing revelation, she shows none of the hesitation and reluctance of a debutante. But she never overplays her hand either, not even in the film’s most sentimental moments. The rest of the cast, including Anjali and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, are no lightweights in their performance, but it is Aditi who holds the film together. Aruvi is not a perfect film. Some parts of the script do feel a tad contrived. And the film too lightly lets off three men who are accused of sexual assault or sexual exploitation. But these are minor quibbles in a film that otherwise works wonderfully. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...

As a renowned nation for mythology, kingdoms in faraway lands and fables in general, the big screen is seldom kind to the filmmakers who venture down this magical path and stand as pillars in history to rewrite that sentiment. But taking away the money bags, the bottom line shows that we love these stories. They fascinate us to no end. If they are told right… Puli is not competition to rewrite history but another venture to exploit the interest Chimbu Deven tapped into at the start of his career in 2006. How one wishes he didn’t.
You see, Puli is neither mythical nor does it have magical lure. There’s magic. In Natarajan “Natty” Subramanian’s camerawork that make you appreciate his skill of capturing a figment land of Chimbu Deven’s imagination. There is magic in T. Muthuraj’s production design. The association between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the southern jewellery major Kalyan jewelers has been existing for quite some time now. Of late, they had even shot a superlative ad featuring all the southern superstars like Prabhu Ganesan, Nagarjuna, Manju Warrier alongwith Amitabh Bachchan. The magnanimity of their larger-than-life ads has always caught everyone's attention and interest for all the right reasons. But the recent ad of Kalyan jewelers that featured in 'The Hindu' newspaper (Delhi edition) on April 17, 2015, caught everyone's attention for the wrong reasons and also irked people. The ad has a 'fair looking' Aishwarya Rai Bachchan resting under a parasol with a dark-skinned slave-boy holding the umbrella for her. In an immediate reaction to the same, a group of women consisting of a feminist activist and also a former chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights amongst others have written an open letter to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan...

The influence of South Indian cinema on Hindi over the years had gradually increased to a whole new level today. In the 90s you simply got accustomed to faces like Nagarjuna and Rajnikanth whose films without fail got dubbed in Hindi. However, come the millennium and the selling of your remake rights and the subsequent acquiring of it by a maker in Hindi cinema has become one of the most prominent business transactions in Indian cinema. We are no longer satisfied with dubbed versions of their films nor are many of the Si makers looking to release such versions of their films.
The idea of remakes allows for the story to be adapted into a new setting to be marketed to a new audience after being customised for their needs. Why risk an original script that may not work when you’ve got a blockbuster script at your disposal that...

Raavanan Language: Tamil (with English subtitles in Delhi and Mumbai)Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithvi Raj, Prabhu, Karthik ADirection: Mani RatnamRating: 4 stars They don’t call him Mani Ratnam for nothing. Raavanan’s story is as familiar as a recurring childhood dream. So Ratnam simply did what he does best: make the characters more nuanced. And that has led to myriad possibilities. Ratnam’s Ram — Dev — has more flaws than the evil Raavan could ever have with all his 10 heads. And Prithviraj as Dev is outstanding — he looks good, acts tough and is ruthless to the point of being heartless. And ...

The Brand ‘Manirathnam’ doesn’t mean it’s an A-rated film and it should be credited with 5-star rating. We have been the diehard buffs of Manirathnam and have appreciated almost all his films for its unique themes. When his ‘Thalapathy’ was a modernized tale of Hindu Epic ‘Mahabharatha’, this one is a pure adaptation of ‘Ramayanam’. There are many connections that prove of such instances, which in many places look so amateurish and kiddy stuff as well. We never expected such a thing from Manirathnam.
Let’s start off relating the characters and instances marking the ‘Ramayanam’…
But it’s a best thing to mention this as a disclaimer about not hurting the feeling of any religious groups...

When Ajith was asked that how all of a sudden how he got himself involved in the story and screenplay in Asal, he said,” It is not all of a sudden. When I see a good project, I get myself involved in other matters apart from acting and all those films have become a great success. For example I can say Kadhal Mannan, Amarkalam, Vaali and Billa. It is the same thing in this film also. But this time I ahd come into the title. This happened because of the magnanimity of Producers Ram Kumar, Prabhu and director Saran.
My prayer was that this film should be a great success for Shivaji Productions because of their good hearts. The next generation of Shivaji’ sir Ram Kumar’s son Dushyianth and Prabhu’s son Vikram have worked so hard in this production. Now I am happy that this hard labor has paid.
