Even among the grunge-punk bands of the late ’80s/early ’90s, there was something foot-stompingly primal about L7. The band’s music was fuzzed-out, four-on-the-floor rock that didn’t earn the sobriquet “heavy” so much as prove why the term should be applied to music in the first place. People didn’t go to L7 shows for Rush-style technical wizardry; fans were there for the raw three-chord churn of distorted mayhem. And, as the trailer for a new documentary, L7: Pretend We’re Dead, reminds us, it kicked ass.
After reuniting in 2014 following a nearly 15-year hiatus, director Sarah Price (The Yes Men) has put together a portrayal of the avowedly feminist group, culling more than 100 hours of archival footage and pairing it with new interviews to create a document of one of the grunge era’s most iconic bands. From the early days in California to single-handedly ...

Sundance = cold. Usually.
The January indie movie festival held in the snowy mountains of Utah is synonymous with winter, but organizers have decided to heat things up a bit.
The film festival has announce plans for a summertime spin-off, with a program of 10 feature films, 10 short films, and special events to be held in Los Angeles on the weekend of Aug. 8-11.
It’s an extension of Sundance’s Next category, which is a loose title given to low-budget or guerilla-style filmmaking.

It's no secret that Film Junk has a few documentary fans on staff and every year we try and highlight some of the stand out non-fiction films. Although The Cove and Anvil! The Story of Anvil made some appearances on our year end lists -- along with a few others on our end of decade list -- we didn't really get a chance to write up any doc specific lists, so I figured I'd share some of the love The Documentary Blog has been spreading over the past week. Below you'll find my top 10 docs of 2009 followed by my top 50 documentaries of the decade. Also, I put together a collection of some acclaimed non-fiction filmmakers (including Joe Berlinger, Sarah Price and Jeff Feuerzeig among others) who have shared their picks for best of the decade as well! You can check that list out here [1]. Until then, have a look below...

Shadow Distribution has acquired North American rights to Chai Vasarhelyi's "I Bring What I Love: Youssou Ndour," a music-filled documentary about the Senegalese musician.
A devout Muslim, Ndour is shown working on his "deeply personal and religious" album, "Egypt," which he hoped would help promote a more benign portrait of Islam.
But "Love" also chronicles the album's disappointing reception among Muslims in Senegal, where it is denounced as blasphemous.
Vasarhelyi followed Ndour for more than two years in shooting the pic, with filming in Africa, Europe and the U.S. The helmer lauded the distribution deal with Shadow.
"Their enthusiasm for the film and their belief in the film's broad potential make them a perfect partner," Vasarhelyi said.
The film's original score was composed by Martin Davich and James Newton Howard.
Exec producers included Edward Tyler Nahem, Jennifer Millstone, Patrick Morris, Jack Turner, Kathryn Tucker and Miklos Vasarhelyi, with Sarah Price,...

When I was a kid, I never got to go to summer camp. Thus, my view of the experience was permanently twisted by Ivan Reitman's Meatballs and Sean Cunningham's Friday the 13th: free-spirited hijinks or death and dismemberment. For a different, possibly more realistic view, you might want to check out Summercamp!, a documentary that's available for free streaming over at SnagFilms. As pictured, sometimes all you want to do at camp is kick back and put up your feet.
Directed by Bradley Beesley (Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, Okie Noodling) and Sarah Price (The Yes Men), the doc follows "the day-to-day drama of 90 kids let loose in the woods at Swift Nature Camp in northern Wisconsin." Our own Jette Kernion said it's "the kind of movie where you just relax your brain and let the images and sounds wash over you ... A lot of the film's appeal...
