- Former Major League baseball player. He is one of only four players to steal 800 bases in a career. He won two World Series championships with the Yankees (1996 and 1998).

- In 1982, entered himself into a rehabilitation clinic and successfully kicked his addiction to cocaine. Admitted that his addiction was so bad that he would hide bags of cocaine in the back pocket of his uniform during games and would always slide head first just to make sure that the bags didn't fall out.
- Has two sons, Tim Jr. (31 December 1979) and Andre (10 July 1983). His son Andre was named after former Montreal Expos teammate Andre Dawson.
- Made major league debut on 11 September 1979.
- Named to Baseball Digest magazine's 1981 Rookie All-Star Team.
