Exclusive: One notable title up for sale we’re hearing about at the European Film Market is Timothy Scott Bogart’s pop Romeo & Juliet musical, Verona starring Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs and Derek Jacobi.
Verona will be the first film in a original pop musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A wide theatrical releaser this Christmas is being planned.
Bogart tells us, “We’ve set out to tell the greatest love story of all time, set to the musical pulse of our time. But Shakespeare only told part of that remarkable tale whose events changed the course of history!”
Voltage is handling international sales on Verona.
Bogart recently directed the 1970s-1980s set feature Spinning Gold about his record label exec father Neil Bogart’s rise and fall with Casablanca Records. That pic is coming out on March 31 in theaters.

Breaking into the original series business, TNT is expected to announce as many as 10 projects in development at its upfront presentation today in Manhattan. Aaron Spelling, John Ridley, James Manos, Mark Rosner and Gary Randall are among the producers and writers with projects under consideration at the cable network. TNT intends to order several pilots in anticipation of having an original series in primetime in summer 2005. Guiding TNT's foray into series programming is senior vp original programming Michael Wright, who will expand his oversight from strictly movies and miniseries. True to its "We know drama" tagline, TNT is developing a fleet of one-hour projects that tread in some of the genre's more familiar settings: precincts, courts and hospitals. The crime-flavored procedural is a particularly common genre among TNT's primetime hopefuls because the network is eyeing a companion to its strongest performer: Law & Order reruns.

Producer Gary A. Randall has inked a one-year overall deal with Touchstone Television. Randall already has lined up two dramas under the pact, which calls for him to develop series projects for the studio targeted for fall 2004. Additionally, Randall has set up a host of projects at several networks, including a drama for NBC with Nash Bridges executive producers Carlton Cuse and John Wirth. Randall first teamed with Touchstone this past development season when he was a co-executive producer on The Street Lawyer, the studio's drama pilot for ABC based on John Grisham's novel. "For the first time, I got the opportunity to work with (Touchstone TV president) Stephen McPherson and (senior vp production) Barry Jossen and their teams," Randall said. "It was such a fabulous experience and opportunity for me that I wanted to do it again." The two projects in the works under the deal are Mi Familia and Brothers Keepers, both with script commitments from ABC.
