Richard Fleischer’s Biblical epic is a class act all the way, and one of producer Dino De Laurentiis’s greatest accomplishments. Anthony Quinn’s guilty, perplexed bandit survives and subsists but never understands the importance of the man crucified in his place; the view of early Christianity is respectful and free of pious clichés. It’s an excellent image of the ancient world, with gladiator scenes that are possibly the best ever. Fleisher does exceedingly well with the enormous sets and a well-chosen international cast: Ernest Borgnine, Valentina Cortese, Vittorio Gassman, Katy Jurado, Arthur Kennedy, Silvana Mangano, Jack Palance.

Antonio Margheriti made several space epics about ‘errant planets’ posing dangers to Earth; this one gets all the attention via star casting. Claude Rains’ bombastic but brilliant scientist advises space command to blow up the planetoid, and then chooses attack day to go see its interior for himself. Toy rockets, overripe dialogue and thunderous acting from Rains ensue, leading to a finale in an ‘alien brain cave’ made of colored plastic tubes. This critical ‘triumph of the imagination’ indeed makes something entertaining out of very, very little. The presentation includes a half-hour docu hosted by Tim Lucas, a graduate class listed as ‘Italo Space Intro 101.’

Mario Bava turns from spooky gothic tales to a relentlessly violent murder spree in the glossy world of high fashion. The large cast gives us a fistful of prime suspects, while the main draw is Bava's powerful direction and razor-keen images - and in this excellent transfer, the colors can only be described as hallucinatory. Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace may not be the first Giallo film but it is the one that many took inspiration from and the genre itself formed from, especially the themes and style. When a young model is killed by a mysterious masked figure she leaves behind a diary which may hold evidence as to the identity of her assailant. As more women from the same fashion house die at the hands of the killer the police try to find the culprit. In a tale of blood and blackmail, can they stop the killer before it is too late?

Mario Bava had been steadily working away in Italian cinema before he hit it big with 1960s Black Sunday, a film which introduced many to both his work and to Italian horror cinema in general. In fact his 1960 opus was such as success that a horror follow-up was eagerly demanded. An so came Black Sabbath, a three-part horror anthology blending modern and period stories, featuring the iconic Boris Karloff as host and star of one of the segments.
Black Sabbath opens with the Victorian-era ‘The Drop of Water’, in which a nurse steals a ring from the corpse of a dead spiritualist, who naturally tries to get it back. This is swiftly followed by the giallo-style ‘The Telephone’, where a...

Max Winkler – yup, Henry’s son – has made his feature-length directorial debut with the coming of-age story, Ceremony.
If you’re a fan of the web-series, Clark and Michael (starring his friends Michael Cera and Clark Duke) you already know Winkler’s work. Ceremony, which he also wrote, follows Sam (Michael Angarano) on a quest to stop a former fling (Uma Thurman) from marrying a worldly filmmaker (Lee Pace).
I talked with Max right before SXSW about the film, how he got the cast and tells me a funny bit of advice his dad gave him.
Where did the idea for this movie come from?
Max Winkler: Well, the idea of the movie probably came from a lot of places. It was pretty personal movie that I wrote, and I thought that would be sort of a good way to make my first film to sort of ensure that...

It's a pretty sure bet that Mel Gibson won't have anything at all to do with a fourth Mad Max movie, but what are the odds on Tom Hardy inheriting the estimable mantle of Max Rockatansky? Very good apparently. And how about Charlize Theron also joining the line up? If we are to believe 'multiple sources', then that's just how it's all shaking out right now. E! Online report that George Miller is casting for the 4th Max right now. They tell us that everything is shrouded in secrecy and the actors coming in to see director George Miller are only being given a letter of the alphabet by which to identify their character. So how have E! linked Hardy to the lead? Was he the letter M? It's moderately safe to assume that Theron's character is a new one and she wouldn't be playing Max's wife Jessie or Thunderdome's...
