The theatrical market across the Nordics recovered in 2022 without reaching pre-pandemic levels, driven predominantly by U.S. fare, such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” the biggest hit in Denmark, Finland and Sweden, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” No 1 in Iceland, and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” No 1 in Norway.
As always Danish movies secured the biggest national market share (30), followed by Finland (27), Norway (23) Sweden (19.3), and Iceland (10). Revenues were often more equally split across a larger number of titles, reaching record levels in several territories, as a result of Covid, that created a bottleneck of new releases.
Denmark
After a quiet start of the year with theaters locked down for the first two weeks due to Covid, ticket sales kickstarted again and ended up at 10.23 million, which is 49 up over 2021, but 20 down on pre-pandemic levels.
Revenue-wise, the Danish market hit Dkk 994.67 million (144.3 million), up 52 from the 2021 annus horribilis for cinemas, but just 16 down on the 2019 trawl,...

A spy movie for children might seem like an odd choice for me to review but I have watched and enjoyed several of the Spy Kid franchise films, so why not try some more?
Next Door Spy is an animated tale about ten year old Agathe-Christine (or AC) who has just moved into a new house and town with her family and wants to a small detective bureau in the basement. Her first case involves a boy who lives nearby and becomes a lot more complicated than she expected.
The animation is a different style to most mainstream animated movies. Maybe because of the low budget but the style used definitely fits with the type of film it...

★★★★☆ Niels Arden Oplev's (director of the first in the original Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy and the recent Deadfall) partly autobiographical film We Shall Overcome (Drømmen, 2006) is a tender portrait of a young boy growing up in 1960s Denmark who, inspired by the speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. takes a stand against tyranny. Thirteen-year-old Frits (Janus Dissing Rathke) is the victim of bullying at school but it is his headmaster, rather than his fellow pupils, who is his main tormentor. Lindum-Svendsen (Bent Mejding) rules the school with a rod of iron and strikes terror into the children's hearts.
Frits' farmer father (Jens Jørn Spottag, a regular fixture in popular Scandi-crime TV series The Protectors) has suffered a nervous breakdown and is in hospital, so Frits finds solace in the company of the school's newest recruit Freddie (Anders W. Berthelsen) a hippy, trainee teacher who introduces...

The 24th Palm Springs Film Festival closed Sunday after 182 films from some 68 countries played for an audience of local enthusiasts and out-of-towners with an appetite for the best in foreign and domestic cinema. Big winners at the festival include "The Cleaner" from Peru, Israel's "Fill the Void," Australia's fest favorite "The Sapphires," the actors of "Caesar Must Die" and "Our Children"'s Emile Dequenne. The complete list of winners is below. During the festival's final weekend I caught a few titles, among them Anne-Grethe Bjarup Riis' "This Life - Some Must Die So Others Can Live," Tobias Lindholm's riveting "A Hijacking" and...
