It's not unusual for the movies to come out of manga and anime series to feel a little off. The stories are often non-canon or otherwise abridged adaptations of ongoing story arcs, and the best thing you can hope for as a viewer is that a given movie captures some hint of what you enjoy about the series. As the manga and anime series focused on the growth and development of its title character, a young ninja in a fantasy world on the path to glory, the movies give him and some of his coterie of allies non-canonical missions on which they can prove their mettle. For a series weighed down with a large number of "filler...

Prescient in more ways than one, Stuart Rosenberg’s bleak melodrama stars Paul Newman as a disk jockey at Wusa, a right wing radio station whose race baiting diatribes trigger a violent uprising. Joanne Woodward, Pat Hingle, and Anthony Perkins, make up the formidable supporting cast. Mocked as over the top in 1970, Robert Stone’s cautionary screenplay was just a dry run for today’s breaking news.

Risk-averse caveman and over-protective dad Grug (Nicolas Cage) finds the Croodaceous times are a-changing when the continents seismically divide, prompting him and his dysfunctional family on history's first road trip. Emma Stone voices his rebellious daughter Eep while Ryan Reynolds is the nomad they encounter on their trek whose knowledge of new-fangled concepts like shoes and fire could save their lives. Visually inventive and action-packed, it leaves the Flintstones in the Dark Ages.

Nicolas Cage voices a caveman dad in what could be called a dose of methadone for Ice Age junkies
If you're pacing back and forth outside the Odeon, scratching your arms and muttering: "When is there going to be a new Ice Age movie? Four wasn't nearly enough. I need another one. I need to feed my fanatical addiction to cutesy prehistoric animations with well-known Hollywood names doing the voices." Well, this could be the one, a sort of methadone for die-hard Ice Age fans. Nicolas Cage voices Grug, the brutish yet lovable lunk of a caveman dad who rules his family strictly, keeping them in the cave. Emma Stone voices his teen daughter Eep, who causes Grug serious heartache when she falls for local cave-teen Guy (Ryan Reynolds). It's amiable enough, but it makes The Flintstones look like it was scripted by Karl Popper.
