Austin, TX — Alamo Drafthouse is excited to announce The Press Room Collection, a new and ongoing collection of prints and other unique items created from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s one-of-a-kind collection of over 60,000 original letterpress plates used for newspaper movie ads from 1930s to the 1980s. The collection launches today at ThePressRoom.bar with an array of items, including a limited-edition poster curated and autographed by Wu-Tang Clan mastermind and kung-fu disciple RZA.
“Kung fu has been called ‘the cinema of vengeance,’ but it was also built on stories of self-reliance, characters finding the strength to overcome impossible odds to carve out their place in society. This theme spoke to audiences worldwide and carried martial arts films into the ‘70s spotlight.
The movies I’ve selected for this print barely scratch the surface of the dynamic and insanely vast world of kung fu, a genre that has become as ingrained in global film,...

As much as movies lived and died by their trailer and movie poster, newspaper ads were equally important for decades. In some cases newspaper movie ads may have featured different titles or taglines, alternate art, or different presentations than you may remember from the theatrical poster. Newspaper ads were an art form of their own and the Alamo Drafthouse has an incredible collection of 60,000 original letterpress plates, featuring movies from the 1930s to the 1980s.
They are sharing these ads with the world in a unique way via "The Press Room Collection," which features an eclectic mix of items that make use of these letterpress plates ads:

When I was a kid I was lucky enough to have a few friends who shared many of my interests– in movies, music, movie monsters, comic books, drama, and other sorts of things that ensured we were forever categorized as “nerds.” (Whatever the modern equivalent of “Nerd” classification is, it doesn’t seem to be quite the albatross around the neck of a kid that it used to be, thankfully.) But among my friends, I was the only one who loved to collect newspaper movie ads, and the bi-monthly movie schedules, or “show calendars,” that my hometown movie theater published to let us know what movies would be rolling into town, usually a year or more after their initial release. I would scour the movie pages of the Portland Oregonian—we lived in Southern Oregon, but my grandma was a subscriber—in search of splashy ads for the latest films,...

Now this is a sweet find. Movie geeks of all ages need to take a moment to watch this short doc, titled The Collection, made by filmmaker Adam Roffman. "The Collection is a short documentary about two friends, DJ Ginsberg and Marilyn Wagner, and their discovery of an astonishing and unique collection of movie memorabilia, comprised of over 40,000 printer blocks and 20,000 printer plates used to create the original newspaper advertisements for virtually every movie released in the United States from the silent period through 1984, when newspapers stopped using the letterpress format." Once you're done watching, you can see more photos of the plates on the film's website. Wish I could see them in person. What an excellent doc. Thanks to Kottke.org for the tip on this short documentary. Original description from Vimeo: "Two friends stumble upon a unique and valuable piece of motion picture history in Omaha, Nebraska.

Okay, kids! Time to saddle up for an exclusive clip from Alex Karpovsky's Rubberneck. So really, just stand around like you have every right to be here and watch it for yourself. Then attract a crowd and have them standing around looking at it.
Rubberneck is directed and co-written (with Garth Donovan) by Alex Karpovsky, who also stars in the film. A slow-burn character study-turned-psychosexual thriller, Rubberneck is a chillingly believable story of workplace romance gone wrong that co-stars Jaime Ray Newman and Dennis Staroselsky and was produced by Donovan, Michael Bowes, and Adam Roffman.
Rubberneck will be available on nationwide VOD starting Feb 19 and in select theaters starting Feb 22.
Synopsis:
Paul Harris is a scientist at a small research facility on the outskirts of Boston. After a weekend tryst with Danielle, an attractive and promiscuous co-worker, leaves him wanting more, his unreciprocated desires gradually mold into an acute infatuation over the following months.

The first film I saw on Day 2 of the Sundance Film Festival was Nowhere Boy, the feature-film directorial debut of Sam Taylor Wood. Nowhere Boy depicts a brief portion of John Lennon’s life, as he struggles to define his relationships with his estranged mother and his domineering aunt. The film stars Aaron Johnson (who’ll light up the screens later this year in Kick Ass) as John Lennon and also features Kristen Scott Thomas as Lennon’s aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff as Lennon’s estranged mother. Matthew Greenhalgh, screenwriter of Control, wrote the script. With the immense talent behind the film, did Nowhere Boy end up being any good? Hit the jump for some of my written thoughts. I was also able to record a video review with Quint and Aaron from Aint It Cool News, Katey Rich from Cinemablend, and Adam Roffman from IFFboston, which you can find after the break.
