He designed seven different productions of Richard Wagner's "Ring" cycle, as well as tiny sets for the Salzburg Marionette Theater. He did pioneering work in stage lighting, projections, and holography for operas, ballets, and dramas.
He originally wanted to be a conductor, and studied conducting in Munich. Conductor Clemens Krauss saw some of his drawings and urged him to become a stage designer instead.
