When the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences began discussing a return to broadcast TV for the Daytime Emmys with CBS last year, the org never could have expected that it would be under these circumstances. But now, NATAS and telecast producer Associated Television Inc. (Ati) are looking at the necessary changes in a Covid-19 world as a chance to reinvent the show.
“Certainly, this is a new and unique experience for us, but it’s one that also carries a lot of opportunity, an opportunity to be a more intimate, tighter broadcast, and one that can be really engaging for the audience,” says Adam Sharp, president and CEO, NATAS.

The show was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, but has now restarted with production working remotely. The series will feature a cast of animated characters, led by anchor James Smartwood, parodying top news stories and interviewing real-world guests, newsmakers and analysts. The series is executive produced by Stephen Colbert and Chris Licht.

The CW is looking ahead to sunnier days, setting season premiere dates for a quartet of its summer series: the unscripted Masters of Illusion and Penn & Teller: Fool Us and dramas Burden of Truth and Bulletproof.
Season 7 of the magic-themed Masters of Illusion will appear at 8 p.m. Friday, May 15, while the show-us-what-you-got magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us kicks off its seventh run at 9 p.m. Monday, June 22.
