The Mandalorian has given Katee Sackhoff, who plays Bo-Katan Kryze on the Star Wars series, perhaps her most popular role. But Sackhoff very nearly didn’t pursue acting at all. In fact, she had a very different career plan until fate intervened. Here’s how Sackhoff decided to become an actor, finding herself on a collision course with Hollywood in the late ’90s.

From 2004 to 2009, Sackhoff played fan-favorite character Starbuck on the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. That Syfy established her as a major name on television, particularly in the sci-fi space. And over the next decade or so, Sackhoff would become a TV mainstay with multiple guest appearances on shows such as Nip/Tuck, 24, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and The Flash.

Lev Grossman’s novel, The Magicians, which is only about seven years old and already has two sequels, is something of a unique effort. It isn’t unique in that it is about a young man at a school of magic, but it is an uncommon attempt to mix Ya fiction (or, more or less Ya fiction), with high fantasy, with something like a pointed disregard for “standard narrative enticements.” It’s almost as though it is working a layered trick to get young audiences to believe that working through school will actually pay off.
Sure, our “hero” Quentin learns there is a school where he can go to learn real magic, but it’s filled with rules, learning magic is monotonous and requires countless hours of study, and the whole thing is likely to drive you mad with frustration. But, if you make it out the other side, you...

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Review
Bravo‘s first foray into original programming, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, is, for good or ill, possibly the safest bet in the history of television. It will probably sound a bit like an insurmountable negative, but the show seems almost to have been created by compiling information from a series of Facebook polls delivered to Bravo‘s target demographic.
Leaving aside the fact that we don’t want to include marital status in our ratings information, the show’s bullet points feel more like a wishlist than a synopsis. Snarky women in a position to do a lot of man-bashing while drinking a lot of wine. Check. Less than fantastically attractive men who act stupid, immature, and generally in such a way that we can refer to them with the pejorative version of “men.” Check. Fantastically attractive men that we can “move on to.” Check.

Since they originally formed back in 1981, Metallica has gone from being an underground heavy metal band to one of the most successful musical acts in the world. The group’s nine studio albums have sold over one-hundred million copies worldwide, they have been nominated for and won dozens of awards, and their songs get more playtime on rock radio than any other band. While the band has already graced the silver screen in the documentary Some Kind of Monster (2004), they’ve returned now with Metallica: Through the Never, a unique hybrid film that blends a fictional narrative with real footage from a set of concerts the band held in summer 2012. Metallica: Through the Never is a solid film, albeit with some notable flaws, but it is definitely worth checking out for fans of Metallica or heavy metal music in general.

When Stargate Universe ended last season pretty much every main character was in a position to die. In typical Stargate fashion, good things come in threes and the season premiere is the third part of the “Intervention” storyline introduced at the end of last season. Currently, the Lucian Alliance has taken control of Destiny and think they have the upper hand, but in reality, Dr. Rush is one step ahead. He begins to even the playing field while Eli helps Greer and Scott, last seen outside the ship, get back on board.
Again, every critic will break out their Battlestar Galactica comparisons with the series and that is fine, but haven’t we spent a year singing that tune? Why not move on already? I think it’s better because the characters are just as interesting, it’s visually more apetizing, and lastly it maintains the middleground between Galactica and Voyager.

There are no Cylons, but Battlestar Galactica fans will find plenty that's familiar about Syfy's forthcoming prequel, Caprica (premiering Jan. 22). "Caprica, like Battlestar Galactica, doesn't treat the genre like a toy department," exec producer David Eick told reporters at Winter Press Tour. "We take it seriously." Translation: The drama, starring Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Polly Walker, and Paula Malcomson, will be brimming with BSG's trademark moral complexity. "There are no stark good guys and bad guys," said fellow e.p. Jane Espenson. "Everyone has moral shadings and we can tell very complex stories as a result." On the flipside,...
