Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) raised $925,000 to help fuel the organization’s efforts to build and preserve affordable housing during the 2023 Los Angeles Builders Ball Presented by City National Bank, the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, on Wednesday, March 8 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Aptly themed “Rise Up,” the annual ‘party-with-a-purpose’ featured red carpet arrivals, a spirited live auction and exciting live entertainment by Award-winning singer, songwriter and actress, Andra Day.
As the evening celebrated the work of individuals and companies who are helping to transform the landscape of Los Angeles, Global Habitat Humanitarians Drew and Jonathan Scott (Property Brothers) — recipients of the Dream Builder Award — expressed gratitude and appreciation for their role in helping Habitat empower families and build strength and stability in our communities through homeownership.
“You know we have the best job in the world,” said Drew. “There’s nothing better than that...

“Almost Love” (which screened at festivals under the title “Sell By”) is the first narrative feature written and directed by actor Mike Doyle, best known for playing forensics tech Ryan O’Halloran on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” from 2002 to 2009. This is an ensemble movie, and Doyle makes the common mistake of first-time writer-directors of cramming far too many characters into his story.
“Almost Love” is one of those ultra-mild movies that is reliant almost entirely on the likability of its large cast, which includes Scott Evans and Augustus Prew (who recently co-starred in the Hulu horror movie “Midnight Kiss”) as the central couple, Adam and Marklin. Adam is a visual artist who pays the bills by working on canvasses for art star Ravella Brewer, who is played in an all-too-brief cameo by Patricia Clarkson.
Marklin operates some kind of fashion site that is so well known and influential that...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Luke Cage” Season 2, including the finale.]
“Luke Cage” series creator Cheo Hodari Coker is a longtime comic book fan, and it shows with the number of fun Easter eggs he includes in the show’s first outing. Since then, Netflix’s Marvel world has expanded, and therefore in Season 2, the show doesn’t hold back when it comes to pop culture references and full-blown crossovers. Many are obvious, but some are for diehards or eagle-eyed, pause-button-happy fans.
“Luke Cage” is the type of show that references the Avengers but never names them. It also exists in the present but feels retro thanks to the heavy ‘90s hip-hop influence and nods to the original comics when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was drafting off the blaxploitation craze. Check out all the Easter eggs and pop-culture references we could find below, and let us know what we’re missing in the comments.
