Based on the novel by renowned Canadian author Carol Shields, Unless tells the story of a family broken by their daughter's puzzling decision to live on the streets.
Starring Catherine Keener as Reta, a mother of three young, smart girls who works as a writer, Reta narrates the story and so we see these events mostly from her own perspective. Norah (Hannah Gross) is a young twenty-something who lives a privileged life and has a loving family, but chooses to sit at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor, outside Toronto landmark Honest Ed's, in a silent protest against a mysterious cause. We feel for her, but more for her parents who have to straddle the line between not doing enough for their daughter,...

Imagine your child makes the decision to live on the streets, but with no reason or explanation.
This is what happens to the Winters, whose eldest daughter is suddenly homeless and refuses to speak to her family or anyone who approaches her, simply holding a sign that says "Goodness", and abandoning her life. Her mother Reta (Catherine Keener) and her father Tom (Matt Craven) want to help their daughter but also don't want to push her further away, and it creates an intense dilemma and mystery at the center of Unless, which is based on the novel by Carol Shields.
In this Exclusive clip, we see Reta, reflecting on her own identity, and her place within her society, which she grapples with in the face of this bizarre situation.

A mystery lies at the shattered core of “Unless,” but it’s not your standard whodunit. Instead, the drama centers on what has caused a college student who argues with her professor over “Madame Bovary” to change into an unspeaking woman begging on the street of the Toronto winter in less than a month. Based on the final novel from author Carol Shields, this quiet Canadian-Irish film wears its heart and its literary roots on its nubby, woolen sleeve.

"How did this part of the story happen?" The first trailer has debuted for an indie drama called Unless, adapted from Carol Shields' novel of the same name.
