His co-counsels in the Watergate prosecutions were Seymour Glanzer and Donald E. Campbell. They obtained indictments of the "Watergate Seven" burglars and won convictions of James McCord and G. Gordon Liddy.
He received a bachelor's degree in history and a law degree from Harvard University.
After Watergate, he was US attorney for the District of Columbia and later went into private practice.
