She narrowly avoided the sinking of S.S. Athena, which was torpedoed on the day Britain declared war on Germany. Her name was taken off the passenger list at the last minute.
When she was a guest star in TV's Dad's Army (1968), she made such a favourable
impression, that she was invited to act in the radio version of the
series.
A memorial service was held for her at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden on 11th October 2002.
