American Horror Story prides itself on shocking, bloody, horrific tableaus, as characters both beloved and detested meet their makers in due course.
There have been dozens and dozens of deaths throughout the five seasons of the series, and there will surely be plenty more to come in the upcoming American Horror Story Season 6 – regardless of the fact that we don't even know yet what the theme of the new season will be.
We've watched as characters who were considered heroes met shocking and unexpected ends and as villains finally got their satisfying comeuppances. Among the many ends throughout the series, a few characters' deaths stand out as particularly shocking – either because of the way they died, the timing, or the circumstances around their demise.
Here are 17 of the most shocking deaths – so far – throughout American Horror Story's five seasons, before the upcoming sixth season tops them all.

Evan Peters hasn't been scared off yet.
The actor is returning to American Horror Story for the anthology's fifth season, Ahs: Hotel, FX announced Friday.
This makes the 28-year-old the only actor to have a starring role in each season so far: Ahs vet Jessica Lange won't be checking in to Hotel, and Sarah Paulson only appeared in three episodes of 2011's Murder House.
As for Peters' real-life fiancée Emma Roberts (Coven, Freak Show)? She's busy giving us chills in another Ryan Murphy slasher show, Scream Queens.
In honor of the good news, People is ranking Peters' four characters – from least creepy to most.

Evan Peters is batting 1.000 on American Horror Story. The actor has a reservation for Ahs: Hotel, joining Sarah Paulson as the only actors to appear in all five seasons of the FX anthology creepshow from Ryan Murphy. Peters’ role in the next Ahs installment wasn’t revealed, but he played “Lobster Boy” Jimmy Darling on Ahs: Freak Show, Kyle Spencer in Coven, Kit Walker in Asylum and Tate Langdon on Season 1’s Murder House. Peters joins Paulson, Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates…...

“American Horror Story” star Evan Peters had a particularly challenging task in “Coven,” the third installment of the FX anthology series. In the most recent season, Peters played Kyle Spencer, a reanimated frat boy who doesn't quite feel himself — because most of his body parts come from other people. With Emmy nominations fast approaching, Peters spoke to TheWrap about the most challenging aspects of playing a Frankenstein-like creature and the joys of onscreen matricide, among other cheery topics. The biggest news on the closing night of PaleyFest was the reveal that Michael Chiklis is joining the American Horror Story cast for the fourth season. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy said the Emmy winner will make his Ams debut playing the father of Evan Peters’ character and the ex-husband of Kathy Bates’ character on American Horror Story: Freak Show, the title of which Murphy announced in a tweet this week. “What a way to come back to my home network,” Chiklis told the screaming crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. “We’re going to freak you and scare you!” Said Murphy: “Every person on this stage is coming back,” referring to Bates, Emma Roberts (Madison Montgomery), Angela Bassett (Marie Laveau), Sarah Paulson (Cordelia Grove), Gabourey Sidibe (Queenie), Frances Conroy (Myrtle Snow), Jamie Brewer (Nan), Denis O’Hare (Spalding) and Evan Peters (Kyle Spencer). While most of the castmembers were announced in the press recently,...

The list of cast members attending this year’s PaleyFest is here, and it’s full of fan favorites. Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina will be there to (hopefully) talk about where their on-screen romance is going, Josh Holloway and Henry Ian Cusick will be among the actors appearing on the 10-year Lost reunion panel, and ABC Family fans should be happy to hear that three out of four Pretty Little Liars will be spilling secrets at their show’s panel.
Tickets for the individual panels can be purchased here, but take a look at the entire list of who’s speaking below first:

“American Horror Story” has made its mark as an anthology series. Each new season presents an entirely new setting with entirely new characters and a change to the name that gives DVRs fits.
This season, of course, American Horror Story decided to tackle the subject of witches. Coven is set in New Orleans. The story threads through three primary time periods, the 1830s, the 1970s, and the present day. Each of those distinct times has bearing on the current story, often in more immediate ways than you might think.
“American Horror Story: Coven” has kept Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, and Frances Conroy just like the previous two seasons. Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, and Jamie Brewer are also familiar faces to anyone who has been following the show. While you might suspect that having a constant cast might get boring, the material and the characters are...

American Horror Story, Season Three, Episode 2: “Boy Parts”
Directed by Michael Rymer
Written by Tim Minear
Airs Wednesdays at 10:00 Pm on FX
Just two episodes in and this season of American Horror Story is already a wicked melange of body horror, black magic and female empowerment. Two major themes prominent so far, are that of resurrection and science versus magic. But Coven is essentially a story about a group of women desperately trying to remain relevant in an ever changing world. In just three seasons, Ryan Murphy and his crew’s employment of heavily atmospheric sets and startling moments of violence combine to create a trendsetting series that has inspired other networks and show runners to take more daring risks. But the stakes here are less primal than that of season two. It didn’t take long for Misty Day (Lily Rabe) and Kyle Spencer (Evan Peters) to return to the show,...
