In our final part of our roundup of this summer’s television scores, we’ll take a look at the shows on TNT, Syfy, HBO and Lifetime. Also check out Part 1 and Part 2 of the series for the composers on all the other major network and cable shows of the summer.
TNT:
The most successful new show of the summer on TNT is the sci-fi series Falling Skies. The project starring Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, Sarah Carter and Maxim Knight is produced by Steven Spielberg and centers on an alien invasion of Earth and the resistance formed by the survivor. Also producing are Graham Yost (Justified) and Robert Rodat (writer of Saving Private Ryan). Noah Sorota is scoring the show. Check out our announcement from earlier this year here and visit Tracksounds for an audio interview with the composer. The two-hour season finale is airing tonight on TNT.

Earlier this week, a soundtrack album for the NBC sci-fi mystery drama The Event has been released. The album features 27 tracks of the original score from the show composed by Scott Starrett. The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to sound clips from all tracks. To learn more about the composer’s score on the project, check out two video interviews below courtesy of Ascap and BuzzFocus.com. The Event created by Nick Wauters stars Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr. and Blair Underwood. While NBC didn’t pick up the show for a second season, there have been talks about a possible future for the show on cable. The complete first season of the series will be released on DVD this August. For more information, visit NBC’s show website.

To the average TV viewer the musical score is meant to cue in characters or help build emotion but it can do much more. At WonderCon, we talked with Scott Starrett, the music composer for NBC’s The Event starring Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Larua Innes, Zeljko Ivanek, Blair Underwood, Scott Patterson, Taylor Cole, and Clifton Collins Jr. The Event’s motto is ‘What Will You Believe?’ and takes viewers on a weekly ride full of twists and turns; the score plays a major part in that and gives additional clues in this alien conspiracy thriller. In this interview, Starrett discusses:
• How the score influences mystery and suspense as well as pacing.
• How the score hints who to trust in The Event.
• What to look for as the finale approaches.
• Musical influences and instrument choices.
