Legendary photographer and friend of actor James Dean. He took many of Dean's iconic photographers and images.
He was a photographer for Magnum Photos Cooperative beginning in 1954.
He was one of ten winners in Life Magazine's Contest for Young Photographers in 1951. He shared honors with Robert Frank, Elliott Erwitt, and Ruth Orkin.
He apprenticed under photographer, Gjon Mili from 1947 to 1951.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Richards, of Sarasota, Florida and Bearsville, New York; three children-Rodney Stock, Raymond Stock, and Christina Stock; a grandson; and five great grandchildren.
The goal for the photographer is to be visually articulate. If the subject is in a suffering circumstance, it is all the more preferable to apply craft to the utmost. Call it art or not, we photographers should always try to pass on our observations with the utmost clarity.
